At frequencies below 30 Mc. practically all amateur communication - except for "local" work over distances of a few miles - is carried on by means of the sky wave. This is a wave that, on leaving the transmitting antenna, would travel on out into empty space if it were not for the fact that under certain conditions it can be sufficiently reflected or refracted, high up in the earth's atmosphere, to reach the earth again at distances varying from zero to about thousand miles from the transmitter. By successive reflections at the earth's surface and in the upper atmosphere, communication can be established over the maximum possible terrestrial distances. Amateurs are using that effect without commercial interests, just for fun..

I am doing Ham Radio in Germany with the help of a simple end-feed wire antenna to the next tree, in about 3 meters high. A so called MTFT transformer with the ratio 1:9 pulled on a FT125K core puts down the high antenna impedance to a level a simple self-build matchbox can handle. The FT450AT with its integrated matchbox can not handle it!!
Here to see in the middle of the trea is a "beer bottle-antenna" at the end of a wire, 12 or 14 meter long! The blue monster in front is a receiver for 400-1000 nm wavelength, also called Newton Teleskop.
My small house in Croatia allows the use of some more advanced antennas like the Cushcraft R4 vertical for the upper shortwave and for the lower frequencies a commercial MTFT transformer is in use..
In Croatia (prefix 9A) 200m above sea level allows a nice view, but also a good propagation in direction East..
zu den Berechnungen..go to the calculation for shortening dipol antennas
Man braucht also eine Matchbox.
Some comments to Gerry Halls (formerly K1PLP, now K1TD - he is the technical editor for the "QST" magazin of the ARRL) formula for shortening a symmetrical half wave dipol with the help of coils: a side effect of the shortening is a reduction of the bandwith and the efficency of the antenna: a part of the energy will simply be converted into warmth in the coils. A further disadvantage is that the antennas impedance will be reduced... therefore a matchbox is needed to go to 50 Ohms again. On all that reasons the mechanical reducement of the antenna length should not be done too far. The alternative is the use of a endfeed antenna with the help of a 1:9 transformer, often called "MTFT unun" - a better way to go on air from my point of view from today
