Smith, alias Bartholomew

This surname with about 170 baptism, marriage and burial entries between 1700 and 1770, and is confusing, as there are several the same name in some age groups, also some are sometimes alias Bartholomew.
I have also listed Bartholomew, alias Smith, as a separate surname. (It helps me to keep my ideas straight.)

Men of 1608 - James Smith, Labourer, tall, 40y, Jerome Smith, Butcher, tall, 40y, Nicholas Smith, Yeoman, short, 40y

Discussion concerning Bartholomew as an Alias

My printout of Tetbury marriages only goes back to 1639, and Bartholomew is not a Tetbury surname.
There is one instance of a Bartholomew in Tetbury which is on the IGI. On 11 Mar 1637 (1637/8) Liddiah Bartholomew daughter of Sarah was baptised. The name Lydia (in its many variations) seems to be a favourite on the B- Smith line. Significant?
Also, from either BTs or PRs [Unfortunately, I did not note which - but at last I'm trying to get into good habits!] I have the burial of Richard SMITH alias BARTHOLOMEW on 14 Mar 1621/2 - so I think the 'alias' has gone on for many generations.
I suspect that many of the Tetbury rectors and clerks were 'economical' when it came to writing down long names! As you remark - they would have known these people, and to whom the records applied.
The name Bartholomew seems to be more common in Wiltshire - and this might indicate an origin.

Three Settlement problems
These three cases are extremes, and more fascinating because they are shared by the one surname.

Richard Smith had a Settlement problem reference P 328a OV 3/1/2 dated 06-Aug 1722
Complaint was made at Shipton upon Stow in Tredington county Worcester, that Richard Smith and Alice his wife arrived with a Settlement certificate showing they belonged to Tetbury, dated 29 January 1716
Richard Smith and Alice his wife have now both departed this life at Shipton, leaving Lidia Smith aged 5 years, Richard aged 3 years and Mary of 19 weeks who are now chargeable on Shipton. So the Overseers are sending them back to Tetbury because Richard did nothing during his time in Shipton to give the children Settlement rghts there, and Tetbury is the father's last legal place of Settlement.

Mary Smith was buried 17310804. She appears to be a person, not a Widow, so guess she is the 9 year old daughter sent back to Tetbury.
13-Dec 1741, Page 2 Lidia Smith and Richard Smith are at the Workhouse.

Mathew Smith and Martha his wife gave to the Overseers of Banbury, Oxfordshire, a Settlement Certificate showing the Tetbury Overseers own and acknowledge Mathew Smith and his wife Martha. This certificate dated 5 July 1722 is folded inside one from the Banbury Overseers dated 24 Apr 1734, concerning the return to Tetbury of William Smith aged 10 years, John Smith aged 8 years and Richard Smith aged 6 years, the children of Martha Smith.
Reference P328a OV 3/1/2 dated 24 Apr 1734, two certificates folded together.

Sarah Smith said under Oath that she was born in Avening, where her father was legally settled. She was hired a year ago by George Lawrence of Tetbury for her victuals and drink and bed.
Reference P328a OV 3/2/1 dated 15-Jan 1770
The Tetbury Overseers decided she be returned to Avening

Hi Elizabeth Joshua the elder is my direct line - though I have seen the will of his son previously. I am related to Hester Wilkins - and hence the Bartholomew Smiths.
I note that you have restricted your information in the 1753 will to names and not mentioned property. Is that deliberate? Joshua senior was passing on 3 properties in Harper Street. I can give you more details if you wish.
I had not seen the wills of Martha Wilkins - which adds to the general picture! Thanks for that.
I printed out all your SMITH data yesterday - and attempted to get my SMITH database up to date. I found one error for certain - and possibly a second.
You have Richard, Hostler of the White Hart, who died 1767 as son of Jeremiah, and who married Joan Garroway.
In fact, Richard son of Jeremiah (and Ann Webb) and who married Joan Garroway died on 11 Apr 1708. He died intestate - and admons were granted to Joane Smith als Bartholomew, widow. His date of death is quoted on the Inventory, and he was buried on 22 Apr 1708.
I wonder what happened to Joan after Richard's death. I have not found a burial - unless it is that of Joan, widow, of Cirencester in 1748. There is no obvious remarriage.
I have not managed to 'pin down' Richard the Hostler- obviously a different Richard. He was probably the same as paid Poor Rates 1748 for the White Horse Inn (Ted Prince Research).
Do you have dates for the other items from Ted Prince. Several of the B-Smiths were butchers, so I would be interested in the date at which Richard provided veal for the Overseers of the Poor.
Thomas (paid 7s 5d for mending shoes) is almost certinly the one buried 1749. He was apprenticed to cordwainer Edward Bezy (Bissy?) & wife Susannah in 1703, when he was described as 'a poor child of Tetbury'.
The second possible error is with this same Thomas Bartlomomew alias Smith - or rather, his wife. Ann Smith's burial in 1748 describes her as a widow - but Thomas Bartholomew alias Smith died the following year - so she would not have been a widow!
I shall look forward to seeing your Smith summaries in due course. Do you have any others, apart from Richard 1779, John 1719 and Jeremiah?
Best wishes
Ruth
