Thomas was adopted by Pearl and Missouri Sue Deaton; therefore not much
is known about him.
There are two stories about who his natural parents were.
One story is that his parents were Dr. and Mrs. Kennedy. The couple got
a divorce and she had Thomas after the divorce and gave him up for
adoption. They were later remarried and had three other children.
The second story was related by Delphia Deaton (first daughter of
Thomas). She said that he was adopted by Pearl and Missouri Sue Deaton.
They lived in New Burnside, IL. Delphia
said that his father was the son of Dr. Jack Fern from
Tunnel Hill, IL. and that one of his grandmothers was Thelma Kennedy.
This story makes sense because Thomas named the children and he named
one of his daughter Thelma Fern Deaton (makes sense that his father's
name might have been Fern, and his grandmother named Thelma).
Florence once described Thomas as being 5'10", slight build and
wiry. He was very spry and active up until he started to work in the
coal mines. After he started working there he started to get sick. He
worked in the mines for about 8 years, becoming sicker and sicker. At
the age of 47 he died from black lung (from coal dust).
