Smerdon Parrish: A real-life mythic Southern character
by Charles Page
The Durham Herald-Sun, 16 Oct 1994
page E-1

With a name like Smerdon, you have to be funny. Smerdon Parrish, one of 250 residents of Stem - a village 20 miles from Durham - was a credit to his unusual moniker. He was the fourth of eight children who grew up on my grandfather's rough, rocky tobacco farm, three miles from Stem. ...When the war [WW II] came ... the farm was condemned to become part of Camp Butner, an Army training base (now a Federal institution for the criminally insane) ...
The rest of the family saw life as serious business, except Smerdon, who seemed serious until you noticed his whim- sical eyes. Smerdon was the entrepreneur, the proprietor of one of three general stores in Stem when it was the commercial "center" of the surrounding farm community.
Smerdon's store was like a private club. "C.S. Parrish, General Merchandise," was a classic country store, containing a cornucopia of items which a farmer or his family might need on short notice, all assembled in one large room. There was a counter, behind which Smerdon presided as village sage, master of ceremonies, guide, comedian, straight man, historian, col- lector and dispenser of local news, gossip and advice. For those who were attentive, there was valuable lore and wisdom to be had. ...
Through Smerdon's store, there was a constant parade of local charachters pausing for a visit and purchasing a gallon of gas, a Coke, a pack of Lucky's (if they were "well off") or a bag of Red Mule chewing tobacco. ...
Not until I was older did I realize the modest purchases were not due to economic circumstances of the Depression so much as the desire for a quick return visit with Smerdon. If one filled up the tank or bought a few packs of cigarettes, the next visit would be delayed and some choice gossip might be missed. ...
An inventory of the store would disclose plow blades, small farming tools and simple farm equipment, all spread out on the floor and on shelves, "overhauls", work shirts, a few shoes, socks, a few silk stockings (with seams, of course), a variety of canned and packaged foods, candies, baked goods, packaged sandwiches, patent medicines and the necessary Coco- Cola box, containing a block of ice, Coke, Orange Crush and other soft drinks popular at the time. There was a spool cab- inet with a variety of threads of basic colors. During its popularity, there was a supply of Hadacol, a high proof elixir guaranteed to cure any misery, consumed in large quantities throughout the South until the true content of this mislabeled booze was disclosed. The mixture contained sufficient bitter herbs to convince the most rabid teetotaler that this was real medicine. No doubt, many a pain was temporarily relieved or anesthetized for folks who would never permit whiskey to cross their lips.
Strategically placed in the middle of the store was the
inevitable potbellied stove surrounded by a sandbox and nail kegs topped with smooth, well-worn planks for the local wits, wags and country philosophers who spent as much time as poss- ible sharing stories with Smerdon and the assmebled faithful. Always present were a few old codgers prepared to humiliate any challenger at the ever-present checkerboard.
When Smerdon reached 65, he retired to his small farm out- side of Stem and devoted himself to his cherished black Angus cattle. He grew vegetables, fixed barbecue for his friends and "put up" his popular pork sausage. He realized, too late, that operating his store was not "work", but his way of life, his club, his stage, his very definition.
After a few months of getting on Aunt Lettie's nerves, Smerdon would start off after breakfast to Lewis Gooch's store. Smerdon and Lewis (never "Lew") had been friendly com- petitors for years, operating stores opposite each other on the dirt road which served as Stem's main street. They compet- ed as much for the local fraternity as for business. Lewis was
rail thin with a hairlip, a warm friendly man, more serious and less whimsical than Smerdon.
Having Smerdon change venue to the Gooch location was a bonanza for Lewis. All those who had enjoyed Smerdon's choice banter over the years shifted loyalty to the Gooch Emporium which, in its own way, had more rustic charm than Smerdon's reasonably "modern" one room facility. The Gooch building had begum life as the Stem Merchantile Company in 1914. Nothing had been changed, painted, remodeled or touched. There were cans of food which could have been part of the original inven- tory. Everything was in a large room with a high ceiling, a wooden floor and, of course, a potbellied stove located in the exact middle, next to the inevitable checkerboard. Fortunately Stem has no earthquakes because the rickety Gooch facility could not have survived a modest tremor. Gooch's inventory was the same eclectic collection of "necessities" as Smerdon's.
Smerdon not only attracted his disciples to the Gooch location, but as an experienced storekeeper, he offered Gooch the opportunity for some leisure. Smerdon agreed to "watch" the store since he was going to be there anyway. Since Smerdon would lose his Social Security if he had a job, he and Gooch reached an understanding about a daily cash stipend which never showed up in the cash register or on any records.
While Durham prospered ... the path to Stem became less traveled. It lost its post office, its school and the daily train. The construction of a modern highway, making available one stop shopping centers in Durham, and in nearby Oxford, caused Gooch's business to dwindle and the store finally closed. ... Thereafter visits with Smerdon were at home with Aunt Lettie, easliy Smerdon's equal in wit and charm. Their delightful repartee was superior to any television sitcom ...
Lettie's sudden death was so devastating to Smerdon that despite his good health he fell into a deep depression and suffered a stroke. The years before his death in 1989 were in a nursing home. ...
In the age before television, Smerdon was the local anchorman and news commentator. Before Walter Cronkite, Smerdon put the world in better perspective. Stories about Smerdon are met with friendly skepticism; the perception being that I have created this mythical Southern character. But Smerdon is no myth; he is a metaphor for the rural American storyteller.
