page2   3.1.4  Classification Of Network

First class of network is Local Area Network (LAN)

Definition:
A network that connects computers and devices in a limited geographical area such as in a building

Main Characteristic of LAN:
          # Area of Coverage
LANs located within the same building (closely positioned group of buildings) such as home and office building.

     # Ownership
LANs are owned and operated by same individual organizations.

     # Distance
LANs span(cover) distance less than a mile

i) Personal Area Network(PAN)
Definition:
A type of wireless/wired network that works within a very small area.

                               @
Network personal devices for one individual such as mobile phone and digital camera that designed to enable those devices to communicate and share data

ii) Home Area Network(HAN)
Definition:
A type of network for homes allowing different computers to share resources including a common Internet connection. For example: connection among devices inside the house

Advantages and Disadvantages of Local Area Network(LAN)

Advantages
Disadvantages
Hardware and software can be shared. Printing can be slow, long print queues may develop.
All the users work can be stored in a central place.
A virus can spread more easily.
Data can be shared because database files stored in the server are available to users around the network.
As data is shared there is a greater need for security.
Users of LAN are able to share devices and data in the network
A few devices are connected to the same network, thus decreasing the speed in the area
LAN has lower set up costs compared to MAN
LAN has to be switched on every minute to increase its efficiency. This will increase the cost of electricity.
