Third class of network is Wide Area Network(WAN)

Definition:
A network that covers a large geographical area such as country and worlwide area

Main Characteristics of WAN:

    #Area Of Coverage
WANs located within o countryside and worldwide networks, (such as country or the world) using a communications channel that combines many types of media such as telephone lines, cables and radio waves. Internet is the world's largest WAN.

    #Ownership
WANs have no ownership

    #Distance
WANs span(cover) distance greater than 100 miles

i)Enterprise Private Network(EPN)
Definition:
A type of network built by an enterprise to interconnect various company site in order to share computer resources.
e.g: production sites, head offices and shops

ii)Virtual Private Network(VPN)
Definition:
A type of private network built over public infrastructure.
By using a number of security mechanisms, including encryption, a VPN allows users to securely access a network from different locations using a public telecommunications network, most frquently the Internet.

Advantage:
Enable a mobile user to connect to corporate network securely whenever Internet connections available.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Wide Area Network(WAN)

 Disadvantage
The scale of sharing becomes far greater and can be worldwide.
 Security become even more important as potential hackers could break into a computer system from anywhere in the world rather thanhaving to physically be in a bulding.
-Encryption of secure data such as financial transactions is necessary because it is even easier to capture data
Software, devices and resources can be shared by all the computers on the network
 Users of WAN should place importance on the security of the network to prevent it from security risks.
The Internet is able to connect people in different countries on this globe because it covers a large geographical area.
 Organizations need to provide regular training sessions for staffs and technicians on ways to maintain the networks, thus resulting in high costs.
