Fruits, seeds and berries, also cultivated corn and bananas.
Plumage general green. Head and throat blue with black ear coverts. Some reddish feathers like a band at the throat. Upper breast feathers broadly edged with blue, giving a "blue" appearance. Periophthalmic ring grey.
Pionus Menstruus Reichenowi: Colors general darker, missing red feathers at the throat.
Pionus Menstruus Rubrigularis: conspicious red band at the throat. Blue colors general duller.
Bill reddish at the base, turning dark at the tips of both mandibles.
