Stavern - the summer town

It was he 28th of December, 2001. Maybe because of the cold weather, I caught a cold today. I took some medicine, but it made me so sleepy. I slept on the train all the way to Larvik. From there we took a taxi to Stavern, which is a small town by the sea, not far from Oslo .

It was still so cold today. Here, in Stavern, they said maybe it was -8C. But the wind from the sea made people feel that it must be -20C.

Stavern - My Norwegian uncle's home town, a place that should belong to the summer. Here they have the sandy beaches, the blue sky, the comfortable hotels, the unique and charmingly styled streets and wooden houses and, of course, the friendly people. But, as my Norwegian uncle said, this moment was the worst time to be in Stavern. What you have are just cold wind and snow, ice. Stavern's geographical position results in a staggering average of 200 sunny days per year and it is surprisingly hot during the summer. Unusually long spring and summer months offer a natural attraction for a country more used to long winter months, especially when blue skies meet the sea in an uninterrupted horizon.

Before the dinner, I just stayed in my room at Wassilioff Hotel, which was built in 1844, and slept for the whole afternoon. There was to be a formal party that night in the hotel, and I was invited to take part in it too. It was my very first time to take part in a western formal party. For this party men need to wear dark suits, and the women need to wear formal dresses. Fortunately I brought my Qi Pao - a very traditional Chinese dress with me so that I could wear it tonight. As my Norwegi

an uncle told me in advance, the people who would take part in the party were around 30 - 60 years old. So I must be the youngest one. But I still found that it was so interesting. We had good seafood. The Norwegian gentleman who sit beside me at the dinner table was so kind and humourous. He strongly recommended that I should come here again in the summer. I do think so too. After the dinner I went to sit in the dance restaurant to have a cup of coffee, to listen to good dancing music and to watch the people dancing. It was a fantastic night for me.

Decemeber 29th was not quite as cold as the day before. After breakfast uncle and I had a short walk around this small town.
