student who lives in Dublin with his uncle, drinks too much and invents
stories in his spare time. These take the form of a novel he is writing
about a man called Trellis.

His uncle: A very religious man
who spends his time arguing with his nephew and complaining about the
latter's inclement to idleness.

Brinsley: One of the narrator's
friend.

Dermot Trellis:
Owner of a public house, he spends his time between writing a novel
about the consequences of sin and
sleeping. Trellis does not
have to create his characters as it is possible for him to borrow or
hire them from the work of other novelists. The main characters

Trellis to perform various small and unimportant tasks.
