Meet the Discalced Carmelite Nuns
at the Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Haifa, Israel

Praying for the reconciliation of hearts
in the heart of the Holy Land

The Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Haifa, Israel was founded 1 January 1892 by a group of Discalced Carmelite nuns from Avignon, France. The original monastery was established on the shore of the Bay of Haifa, in what was then the suburb of Zaourah. In 1937, the community moved to the great monastery on the northern ridge of Mount Carmel, whose architecture won international awards at the Paris World's Fair.

Today, the community includes nearly twenty women from every continent. In the photo below (taken in 1994) the community gathers during recreation in the section of their enclosed garden that overlooks the Bay of Haifa.
