April--the Diamond
Carbon
Diamonds are pure carbon formed under extreme heat and pressure 60 million years ago.  They formed along pipes of ancient volcanos.  Diamond comes ffrom the Greek word "adamas" meaning "invincible".  A diamond has a hardness of 10, and is therefore the hardest known substance.  They are often used in drilling and grinding materials.  Diamonds have a octahedra crystal.  They have adamantine luster, making them highly desired.  Only about 1/5 of all diamonds can be cut into gemstones for use in jewlery-making.  Diamonds are found in many colors, including, clear, pale yellow, blue, green, pink, and black.

When diamonds are heated to 900*C they turn to CO2  and go into the atmostphere.  Another varietion of pure carbon is coal.  The atoms are less tightly compacted than in diamonds, so the substance has completly different properties..
