WHY HAVE YOUR PET SPAYED?

A kitten or puppy is a pleasant addition to a family, but when it matures and starts having litters of kittiens or puppies, these litters and sometimes even the cat or dog are usually unwanted.   While most Americans don't mean to be cruel to animals, some pet owners will let the unwanted kittens or puppies, cat or dog off on their own so they'll have a running "chance" rather than have them face an almost certain death at the pound or shelter.  But the abandoned animal, whether living in a home, that really doesn't want it, or fending for itself in the fields or streets, doesn't stand a chance.  Most abandoned pets starve to death, contract disease by rummaging through garbage, get hit by cars, or become victims of other torturous deaths.  The ones that are presented to shelters, except some no-kill shelters, don't fare much better.   Given the competition for homes each year, millions of cats and dogs are put to death within a week of being "rescued"by humane groups.

Prevention is the Answer !  The best way to prevent these senseless cruelties to animals is to prevent the birth of unwanted litters.  Furever Animals, inc. recommends the paying of female dogs and cats and neutering of males who contribute to pregnancies, as the solution to the pet overpopulation problem in the United States.

WHAT IS SPAYING ?

Spaying a cat or dog is a routine procdure in which the ovaries and the uterus of the female are removed in order to prvent pregnancy.  It also prevents the animal from coming into oestrus (the heat period) which in itself is troublesome to the pet owner.

WHAT IS NEUTERING ?

Neutering is the removal of the testes in a male cat or dog.  Neutering results in a more devoted male dog or cat.  An unneutered cat or dog has a tendancy to mark it's territory to attract females by spraying urine.  Both dogs and cats when neutered, tend to stay closer to home and stop wandering after females.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FO SPAYING / NEUTERING ?

Your pet will be healthier!  Your female dog or cat will not have to suffer the stress and frustration of heat periods and faces much less risk of developing cancer of the breast or serious infections of the uterus.  Your male dog or cat will no longer want to fight other animals and faces much less risk of developing prostate infections or prostate cancer.

Neutering a male cat when it is young, will help curb him from spraying urine.  In older males eho have already begun the habit, the success rate is slightly lower.

Spaying / neutering will take away an animal's sexual desire, this the animal will have less tendency to roam away from your property.  If hyperactivity is related to the breed or if it is a behavioral problem, the surgery will have little or no effect on the animal.  Consult an animal trainer or a veterinarian.

SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS FOR THE TAXPAYER

In addition to preventing the bith of unwanted animals, there are many financial benefits to a community that promotes breeding control.  In preventing the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens through breeding control:  It saves on shelter and animal control costs.  The average cost of collecting, sheltering and killing one animal is $ 40.00.  The spaying of one female will prevent the birth of some 30 young over one year's time and thus save the community $ 1200 in the costs of having the aniamls collected and then killed in pounds and shelters.

It saves sanitation costs because abandoned animals overturn garbage and soil our streets.
It saves medical costs, from dog bites to sickness and diseases or parasites which can be transmitted by abandoned animals to healthy animals.
It saves on license fees to pet-owners because many towns offer reduced prices on license fees for pets who have been spayed or neutered.
