The first Kwanzaa was celebrated by Maulana Karenga, the chair of Black Studies at California State University at Long Beach. Blacks riot in Watts (Los Angeles); two men killed and at least 25 injured. Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton founded The Black Panther Party. Janet Jackson, singer, was born. Halle Berry, actress, was born. Chris Rock, comedian, was born. Gary Coleman, Zion III, actor, was born. Walt Disney, animated film producer, died. Star Trek and Batman air for the first time on TV. The first lunar orbiter was launched. Federal funding was denied to 12 school districts in the South because of violations of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Xerox marketed the Telecopier, the first fax machine. The 1951-1953 CBS sitcom Amos & Andy was pulled from circulation due to civil rights organization protests. Floyd McKissick was named National Director of CORE. Julian Bond was denied seat in the Georgia legislature for opposing the Vietnam War. Muhammad Ali, boxer, successfull defended his title five times. Frank Robinson was named the American League MVP. SF Giant, Willie Mays signed the highest contract, $130,000 per year. Wilt Chamberlin breaks the NBA career scoring record at 20,884 points. Bill Russel became the first black coach in NBA history (Boston Celtics). The Atlanta Braves won their first game, beating the NY Mets 8-4. Willie Mays hit his 512th homerun. Super Bowl I : Green Bay won 35-10 over the Kansas City Chiefs.
