A garage near a residence on Columbia Avenue in Morris was destroyed and a vehicle pushed through the front wall by a collision involving a car allegedly stolen by a man facing numerous charges in Stevens County District Court.
Work by law enforcement and citizens tips have led to the arrest of a 23-year-old Morris man who may be responsible for a series of vehicle and personal property thefts in the city over several months.
Marc Allen Smith has been charged with multiple offenses following a short but high-speed escape attempt in a stolen vehicle in Morris last week.
Smith faces charges based on a complaint by the Stevens County Sheriffs Office, and likely will have numerous addition charges filed against him based on an investigation by the Morris Police Department.
Smith appeared in Stevens County District Court this week on charges of fleeing a law enforcement officer, refusing a test for Driving While Intoxicated, and operating a vehicle with a suspended drivers license.
Smith is being held on $9,000 bail.
The incidents leading to Smiths arrest began on Sept. 20 when police received a report of a stolen vehicle. Smith allegedly left that vehicle and stole a 2003 Dodge Intrepid.
When that stolen car report came in, Stevens County Sheriffs Deputy Graham Holtberg noticed the vehicle on Atlantic Avenue.
Holtberg said he pursued the vehicle, which then accelerated and turned onto East 10th Street.
The driver slowed and I thought he was going to stop, Holtberg said. Then he took off at a high rate of speed.
Holtberg did not follow closely, and the vehicle then ran a stop sign at the intersection with Columbia Avenue and plowed into a garage near a residence on the avenue. The impact pushed a vehicle in the garage through the front wall.
The suspect left the vehicle and ran for about half a block but was subdued by Holtberg, who employed a Taser.
It all happened fast, Holtberg said. It was less than two minutes from beginning to end.
Police then found items which has been reported stolen in the Intrepid, and a subsequent search of Smiths residence also turned up more stolen property, according to Morris Police Chief Jim Beauregard.
We may have solved a lot of theft issues we had over the summer, Beauregard said.
More charges are expected while the investigation continues. Its not known if other individuals were involved with Smith, Beauregard said.
The incident magnifies the need for citizens to be alert to activities in their neighborhoods and to not hesitate to notify law enforcement, he said.
What started as a citizen tip may end up helping us solve thefts that have been going on the last six or eight months, Beauregard said. We got phone calls from citizens on this deal. People saw something that didnt look quite right and they called us. When the police department has the support of the community we have success in solving crimes. What people didnt say was, I dont want to be involved. "

    "Hi Officer Jason Reed,

Brett wanted me to give you the serial# of his car stereo (#NSA060 21565491) and model # (XD7500)

Below are the pictures I took with my camera phone of the 2 young teenager "hoodlums"...

Hoodlum 1-shaved head around w/almost a brown color mohawk (less than 1" height) haircut style on top

    Hoodlum 2-wearing a dark (blue/black) hooded sweatshirt
*both Caucasian-white clor skin, young, etc...

I got very supicious as I happend to be looking out of my living window on Saturday (Nov 18th) afternoon (12:31pm according to my picture phone). The two young boys just had that "city" walk-walking around my nighbors' cars and would stop to look inside the car. After they continued west on E. 3rd St., I went outside to see where they were going, but didn't see them anymore. I then closed my doors after going out of town Saturday afternoon.

Also, late this morning (around 11:45am Sunday, Nov 19th 06') while putting church signs (Morris Community Church on 211 E. 6th St.) I got a little supicious again of this dark dirty blue Ford Taurus [toy model, 95' model-I think it was a late 80's model?) (sp?) going south on Colorado Avenue (see City of Morris map) because I thought I saw the same two "hoodlums" I saw by my house (109 E. 3rd St.)
