While living in Tennessee George served as a captain in the War of 1812. He and his family joined a wagon train from Mayfield, Kentucky about 1833 and headed for Texas by way of Missouri. The Shults were also in this wagon train. In the Fall of 1833 at the Oklahoma and Texas border soldiers stopped the wagon train indicating Indians were on the warpath. Arka Genia Winton was born on May 16, 1890 in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas and died in McCurtain County, Oklahoma on June 10, 1961 while on a fishing trip with her son, Hubert. She married Tollie Nelson Needham on November 7, 1914 in Fame, Oklahoma. Arka was a widow at the age of 39 and never remarried. She raised her four children alone on her farm in McIntosh County. In her later years she moved into Checotah and lived there untill her death. Arka, Tollie, Bill and Ida are all buried at Fame Cemetery.

On Arka's tombstone, it states that her birth year is 1891. It also says that on the copy of her "Delayed Birth Certificate". On her marriage license it states that she was 23 years old on November 2, 1914. All this aside, Grandma Needham always said she was born in 1890. If you will notice up above, her younger brother Harrison Jefferson Winton, was born on March 20, 1891, and that is what it says on his tombstone. So, as for our family records...her official date of birth is 1890. We will assume that she knew her correct birthdate!

The story goes that when her father sent after her "Delayed Birth Certificate", he gave them the wrong date for her birth. She always claimed that he beat her out of a years worth of 'old age pension' by saying she was one year younger than she actually was.

The Kemp Family

Nathan Byrd Kemp was born about 1798. He had a son *Byrd Kemp.

Byrd Kemp was born in 1821 in Tennessee. He married Sarah Horn. Sarah was born in 1827 in Alabama. Sarah died in 1860 at Muddy Fork Township, Pike County, Arkansas. She may have died in childbirth. According to the 1870 Pike County, Arkansas Census, there is a child named George Kemp who is 10 years old. He was not listed on the 1860 census. Since that is the year his mother, Sarah, died, It is highly likely that she died giving him birth. The birth year for each child below is figured on the age given on the 1860 census, which means the dates could be off by one year. The three older children were not listed again on the 1879 census. They had obviously left home by then.

Byrd and Sarah had the following children:
1. J.R. Kemp........Born 1844 in Tennessee.
2. *Mariah Catherine Kemp.....See Below
3. Eliza Jane Kemp......Born March 24, 1849 in Tennessee. Married James Lacy Chapell in Pike County, Arkansas on January 8, 1872. Eliza died November 30, 1914.
4. Wisener L. Kemp......Born 1850 in Tennessee.
5. Sallie A. Kemp........Born 1855 in Arkansas.
6. Elihu Kemp.......Born 1857 in Arkansas.
7. Nancy E. Kemp......Born 1858 in Arkansas.
8. George Kemp.......Born 1859 in Arkansas.

In the 1870 census Byrd is married to a woman named Nancy and there are three children listed who were born after 1860. So they must be Byrd and Nancys children: Isaac, Caroline and William. Caroline and William are both listed as 9 years old. Some women back then had two children in one year, or they may have been twins. Byrd died on December 25, 1885.

Mariah Catherine Kemp was born on December 25, 1847. There are conflicting sources that say she was born in Tennessee and in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. The 1860 census states she was born in Tennessee. Mariah married John B. Wilson on August 5, 1867 in Pike County, Arkansas. Mariah's sister was named Eliza Jane. They were just a year apart in age and must have been close for Mariah to name one of her daughters after her. John died on February 27, 1897. Mariah died on September 5, 1924.

They had the following children:
1. ***Nancy Jane Holcomb/Wilson....Born June 10, 1865 in Mena, Arkansas. Married Joseph Mack Winton. Died June 10, 1928, Latimer County, Oklahoma.
2. Saria Frances Wilson....Born May 24, 1868 in in Potter, Pike County, Arkansas. Married Joseph Payne. Died about 1864 in Potter, Pike County, Arkansas.
3. Martha Ann Wilson....Born January 30, 1871 in Potter, Pike County, Arkansas. Died October 10, 1942. Married twice: John Snider and James Cooper.
4. Mary Ann Wilson....Born January 30, 1871 in Potter, Pike County, Arkansas. Died May 21, 1936.
5. *Eliza Jane Wilson .....See below
6. John William Wilson.....Born February 27, 1875 in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. Died June 16, 1943 in Pushmataha, Oklahoma.
7. Charles Wilson....Born 1876 in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. Died 1876.
8. Frances Wilson.....Born June 8, 1878 in Potter, Pike County, Arkansas. Died December 12, 1957 in Modesto, California.
9. Palmyram Wilson....Born 1880 in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. Died 1962 in El Reno, Oklahoma.
10. Florence Wilson.....Born 1882 in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. Married James Isom January 5, 1898 in Eufaula, Oklahoma.
11. Larence Wilson....Born April 17, 1884 in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. Died 1945.
12. Ruth Catherine Wilson.....Born 1886 in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. Died 1962 in Chowchilla, California.

***The LDS file (Latter Day Saints) shows Mariah Catherine Kemp was evidently married to a Holcomb or Halcomb before she married John B. Wilson and that possibly Nancy Jane Wilson was actually a child from that marriage. The LDS file shows Nancy's last name as Holcomb.

Eliza Jane Wilson was born on January 2, 1873 in Potter, Polk County, Arkansas. She married Zollie Coffer Winton in 1888 in Polk County, Arkansas. She died on July 25, 1924. Zollie died July 3, 1947 in Fame, McIntosh County, Oklahoma. Eliza and Zollie are both buried at Fame Cemetery.
