You add fluorides.…But this toxicity question is a difficult one…One thing that is hard to handle is the charge that fluoridation is not needed. They talk of other methods, and when they get through adding up all the percentages of decay that we can reduce by such methods, we end up with a minus. When they take us at our own word they make awful liars out of us…Now, why should we do a pre-fluoridation survey? Is it to find out if fluoridation works? No. We have told the public it works, so we can't go back on that…Lay off [the question of toxicity] altogether. The same year nuclear testing began, a boy named Preston Truman was born near Enterprise [Utah]. His parents, ranchers and farmers, taught Preston to ride a horse at the same time he learned to walk.I can remember,he would recall, several times getting up with the rest of the family and driving out to my father's farm in the moments before dawn and watching the western sky light up with the flash from the bombs in Nevada approximately 112 miles away. I remember on occasion hearing the sound waves come over. I remember later in the mornings watching on a couple of occasions clouds come over. To a little child that didn't mean much. The atomic tests were very much a part of our lives. When he was in high school, Preston Truman was diagnosed with a form of cancer called lymphoma. Chemotherapy and other medical treatment over the next thirteen years cost about $100,000. As was true for all other downwind residents, the government did not provide a penny. But Truman was relatively lucky. In 1980 he was in remission from the usually fatal lymphoma. Out of nine children who were his friends in the immediate area of Enterprise when he was a child, Truman was the only one who reached the age of 28. The rest died of leukemia or cancer. KOO

(This could affect the PHS' not only re radiation but also things like fluorine, which is very important to the nuclear industry.)Anxious to counter its increasing credibility problems, in 1954 the Atomic Energy Commission entered into an off-site radioactivity surveillance agreement with the US Public Health Service. Not until 1979 did the terms of the AEC-PHS arrangement become public knowledge.…
The 1954 pact prohibited the PHS from any public release of its radiation data or
dissemination of information connected with activities under this agreement, except as prescribed by the AEC…At the end of the year AEC tossed in a stipulation that any unauthorized release of information to the public could subjectthe Public Health Service, its agents, employees, or subcontractors, to criminal liabilityunder the Atomic Energy Act. I was in Guatemala when the CIA was preparing its attack on the Arbenz government. Arbenz, who was a democratically elected president, mildly socialist [sic]. His state had no revenues; its biggst income maker was United Fruit Company. So Arbenz put the tiniest of taxes on bananas, and Henry Cabot Lodge got up in the Senate and said the Communists have taken over Guatemala and we must act. He got to Eisenhower, who sent in the CIA, and they overthrew the government. We installed a military dictator, and there's been nothing but bloodshed ever since. Now, if I were a Guatemalan and had the means to drop something on somebody in Washington, or anywhere Americans were, I'd be tempted to do it. Especially if I had lost my entire family and seen my country blown to bits because United Fruit didn't want to pay taxes. Now, that's the way we operate. And that's why we got to be so hated. The task to which we have set our minds, declared the governor of Kenya in 1955,is to civilize a great mass of human beings who are in a very primitive moral and social state. The slaughter of thousands of nationalists, who were never called nationalists, was British government policy. The myth of the Kenyan uprising was that the Mau Mau broughtdemonic terrorto the heroic white settlers. In fact, the Mau Mau killed just 32 Europeans, compared with the estimated 10,000 Kenyans killed by the British, who ran concentration camps where the conditions were so harsh that 402 inmates died in just one month. Torture, flogging and abuse of women and children were commonplace. I
Despite its claims that neither the detonations nor fallout were harmful, the Atomic Energy Commission routinely waited until the winds were blowing in therightdirection.[35] That meant away from big cities like Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Occasionally at the last minute shifting breezes dumped fallout on large metropolitan areas—Las Vegas was sprinkled with radioactivity in 1955, for example, and three years later fallout clouds dropped on Los Angeles. But for the most part America's continental nuclear tests went according to plan. The most deadly concentrations of fallout came down in rural areas of Nevada, Utah, and northern Arizona. KOO
Many experiments that tested various biological agents on human subjects, referred to as Operation Whitecoat, were carried out at Ft Detrick MD in the 1950s. The human subjects originally consisted of volunteer enlisted men. However, after the enlisted men staged a sitdown strike to obtain more information about the dangers of the biological tests, Seventh-Day Adventists who were conscientious objectors were recruited for the studies. Because these individuals did not believe in engaging in actual combat, they instead volunteered to be human subjects in military research projects that tested various infectious agents. At least 2200 military personnel who were Seventh-Day Adventists volunteered for biological testing during the 1950s through the 1970s. Unlike most of the studies discussed in this report, Operation Whitecoat was truly voluntary. Leaders of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church described these human subjects asconscientious participants, rather thanconscientious objectors, because they were willing to risk their lives by participating in research rather than by fighting a war. Satire presents a further difficulty for the mass audience. If satire is to be effective, the audience must be aware of the thing satirised. If they are not, the joke falls flat. Unfortunately for our native satirists, the American mass audience posesses very little general information on any subject…Even political jokes, if they were allowed on television, would not have much relevance. Recently one national poll disclosed that almost half of those queried could not identify the Secretary of State. The size of the population has much to do with this collective ignorance…National units today are too large and, in America at least, education too bland to hope for much change. As a result, satire, unless done very broadly puzzles and irritates rather than amuses. [Vidal United States 1162]
In June 1957 Linus Pauling estimated in a Foreign Policy Bulletin article that 10,000 persons had died or were dying from leukemia because of nuclear tests. A month earlier Pauling's colleague E. B. Lewis had published a more detailed analysis in Science. Using four sets of data, Lewis showed that there was no safe level of exposure; leukemia incidence seemed to be directly proportionate to the amount of the radiation dose. These articles documented the absence of anysafedose of radiation. And the pair of [CalTech] scientists also broke new ground by estimating the number of deaths from strontium-90 fallout. The AEC countered Lewis in a later article in Science by Austin Brues, the commission's director of Biology and Medicine. Brues argued that the evidence wasn't strong enough to support Pauling or Lewis, calling their approach one of
superficial simplicity.Instead, Brues insisted, facts corroborated the existence of athresholddose of radiation, below which no biological damage would occur. The Joint Committee on Atomic Energy hearings in 1957 proved to be a watershed in the fallout debate. Dr. Ralph Lapp cut short a trip to Japan to appear before the committee. His opening presentation pointed to
reckless and non-substantiated statementsmade by the AEC. He called attention to claims by the AEC's New York Health and Safety Lab chief Merrill Eisenbud, who had announced thatthe total fallout to date from all tests would have to be multiplied by a million to produce visible deleterious effects in areas close to the explosion itself.Eisenbud took the stand in his defense, putting qualifications on his earlier statement. Eisenbud claimed to have been
talking about the immediate gamma radiation from the fallout which occurs in the eastern US within a matter of a day or so after detonation in Nevada. He then accused Lapp of taking his statementout of context.Lapp quickly responded from the audience by multiplying the amounts of radiation exposure calculated by Eisenbud to be present in the Troy/Albany area after the Simon bomb test in 1953 by a million times. It amounted to an average exposure of 10,000 roentgens. Stunned by this calculation, Senator Clinton Anderson asked if such a dose
would kill everybody in sight.Eisenbud, red-faced, answered with a meekYes.KOO
plutonium can catch fire spontaneously in air. In the evening of September 11, 1957, some of theskullson the glove box line of Room 180 in Building 771 ignited. The fire was found by two plant production men shortly after 10:00 P.M.The area was designed to be fireproof. But it was soon a radioactive inferno. Firemen switched on ventilating fans, but that backfired, spreading flames to still more plutonium. They then sprayed carbon dioxide into the area. That also failed. Meanwhile the filters designed to trap plutonium escaping up the stacks caught fire. The shift captain and other observers reported a billowing black cloud pouring some 80 to 160 feet into the air above the 150-foot-high stack of Building 771.
As the crisis intensified, plant officials struggled to find a solution. They knew water would destroy millions of dollars' worth of complex equipment. They also knew the intense heat might flash the water into enough steam to blast into an explosion and send even more plutonium particles flying toward Denver. But when the carbon dioxide failed, there was no alternative. In the early hours of the morning water began pouring into the blaze. Fortunately it worked. The fire went dead roughly thirteen hours after it began.
[The AEC vents its habitual lies of
insignificant amounts of radiation released.although] there was no reliable equipment operable at the time to monitor the amount of radiation that actually went out the stacks. Not until a week after the fire were working gauges installed. Then, in a single day, emissions registered sixteen thousand times the permissible level—a full fifty years' worth of the allowable quota. Some 14–20 kg were estimated to have burned in the fire, enough to make at least two bombs equivalent to the one dropped on Nagasaki. And that may not have been the worst of it. According to a study based on figures from Dow Chemical, which operated Rocky Flats at the time, some 13 g of plutonium were routinely deposited daily on the first stage of filters in Building 771. According to government documents obtained in a lawsuit against the plant, the 620 filters in the building's main plenum had not been changed since they were installed four years before the fire. Thus a pair of local researchers theorized that as much as 250 kg of airborne plutonium could have gone out the stacks from the burning filters alone.
Such an enormous release of plutonium struck some in the Denver area as beyond plausibility. But a much lower estimate of 48.8 pounds of plutonium—one tenth of the 250-kilogram figure—was calculated as enough to administer each of the 1.4 million people in the Denver environs a radiation dose one million times the maximum permissible lung burden.
I find the high release estimates hard to believe,we were told by &Dr;John Cobb of the University of Colorado Medical School. But even if only one gram of plutonium escaped, as the plant operators say, that would be cause for concern.Nor was plutonium the fire's only by-product. The water used to extinguish it became infused with radioactivity. In this case some thirty thousand gallons of it escaped unfiltered, thus spreading its contamination into local streams and the water table. Can that be an accident?)One thing that kept us from seeing [our evolution into Homo Colossus, a detritovore headed for a crash like yeast in grape mash], and enabled us to rush exuberantly into niches that had to be temporary, was our ability to give ideological legitimation to occupations that made no sense ecologically. When General Eisenhower, as retiring president, warned the American people to beware of unwarranted influence wielded by the military-industrial complex, it was presumably political and economic influence that he had in mind. But the MIC was a vast conglomeration of occupational niches. As such, it wielded an altogether different (and even more insidious) kind of influence. The MIC helped perpetuate the illusion that we still had a carrying-capacity surplus; it made it profitable for the living generation to extract and use up natural resources that might otherwise have been left for posterity. It absorbed for a while most of the excess labor force displaced by technological progress from older occupational niches that had been less dependent on drawing down reservoirs of exhaustible resources. It thus helped us believe that the Age of Exuberance could go on. DO- 1961 Jan 20: John Fitzgerald Kennedy is anointed. Att'y Gen'l is brother Robert. Robert S. When five Pakistanis brought smallpox to England and started the outbreak of 1961–2, it was known they all had valid certificates of revaccination, showing more than one dose; but this fact was published only after, instead of before, the Press and Radio had started playing the fool as usual, and spreading panic and pox all over the country. The Ministry knew that this would cause more death and injury than a few smallpox cases. The five Pakistanis themselves had already proved that vaccination is a dangerous fraud, and so the injections had to be restricted to contacts only.During the Brighton smallpox outbreak (1950–51), the usual BBC encephalitis campaign opened with an anonymous doctor assuring the world, with authoritative emphasis, that `smallpox is the most infectious disease known to Man'! The BBC had evidently never heard of influenza [see 1918]. During the smallpox outbreak of 1961–2, on the other hand, we heard medical officers of health saying on the radio such things as, `After all, smallpox is not such a very infectious disease.' This would have been held to be pure blasphemy only a few years ago. May the good work go on! BP

West's good friend, Aldous Huxley, suggested that he hypnotize his subjects before administering LSD, in order to give them post-hypnotic suggestions which would orient the drug-induced experience in adesired direction.Interestingly, West was the psychiatrist who examined Jack Ruby, the assassin of Lee Harvey Oswald. Ruby's assertion that an ultra-Right-wing cabal was responsible for JFK's murder, and his refusal to admit insanity, led West to conclude that he was paranoid and mentally ill. West placed Ruby on anti-depressants, which did little to modify his claims of conspiracy. He died of cancer two years later, claiming to the end that he had been injected with cancerous biological material.
West also examined Sirhan Sirhan, a controlled hypo-patsy who allegedly killed Robert F. Kennedy. Currently chairman of UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute, West headed the American Psychological Association (APA) trauma response team that rushed to Oklahoma City in the wake of the [1995] 5disaster…
In the wake of the 1965 Watts riot, West proposed to then California Governor Ronald Reagan a

16 Questionsraise doubt about the Warren Commission's idears even before their report comes out.
- Why were all the members of the Warren Commission closely connected with the US Government?
- If, as we are told, Oswald was the lone assassin, where is the issue of national security?
- If the Government is so certain of its case, why has it conducted all its inquiries in the strictest secrecy?
- Why did the Warren Commission not establish a panel to deal with the question of who killed President Kennedy?
- Why have so many liberals abandoned their own responsibility to a Commission whose circumstances they refuse to examine?
- Why did the authorities follow many persons as potential assassins and fail to observe Oswald's entry into the book depository building while allegedly carrying a rifle over three feet long?
- Why was the President's route changed at the last minute to take him past Oswald's place of work?
- Why has the medical evidence concerning the President's death been altered out of recognition?
- What is the evidence to substantiate the allegation that the President was shot from behind?
- Why has the FBI refused to publish what could be the most reliable piece of evidence in the whole case?
- How is it that millions of people have been misled by complete forgeries in the press?
- Why was the result of the paraffin test altered before being announced by the authorities?
- Why was the only description of Tippitt's killer deliberately omitted by the police from the affidavit of the sole eye-witness?
- Why was Oswald's description in connection with the murder of Patrolman Tippitt broadcast over Dallas police radio at 12:43 pm on November 22, when Tippitt was not shot until 1:06 pm?

It may be recalled that from 1965 to 1967, an attempt by International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT) to acquire ABC was frustrated following a huge outcry that focused on the dangers of allowing a great multinational corporation with extensive foreign investments and business activities to control a major media outlet. The fear was that ITT controlcould compromise the independence of ABC's news coverage of political events in countries where ITT has interests. The soundness of the decision disallowing the acquisition seemed to have been vindicated by the later revelations of ITT's political bribery and involvement in attempts to overthrow the government of Chile. RCA and Westinghouse, however, had been permitted to control media companies long before the ITT case, although some of the objections applicable to ITT would seem to apply to them as well. GE is a more powerful company than ITT, with an extensive international reach, deeply involved in the nuclear power business, and far more important than ITT in the arms industry. It is a highly centralized and quite secretive organization, but one with a vast stake inpoliticaldecisions. GE has contributed to the funding of the American Enterprise Institute, a right-wing think tank that supports intellectuals who will get the business message across. With the acquisition of ABC, GE should be in a far better position to assure that sound views are given proper attention. The lack of outcry over its takeover of RCA and NBC resulted in part from the fact that RCA control over NBC had already breached the gate of separateness, but it also reflected the more pro-business and laissez-faire environment of the Reagan era. I know of the operations of this network (of the international power structure) because I have studied it for twenty years and was permitted, for two years, in the early 1960's, to examine its papers and secret records…I have no aversion to it or to most of its aims and I have, for much of my life, been close to it and to many of its instruments. The world at large believes that if JFK were alive there would be no war in Vietnam. The mythmakers have obscured the fact that it was JFK who began our active participation in the war when, in 1961, he added to the 600 American observers the first of a gradual buildup of American troops, which reached 20000 at the time of his assassination. And there is no evidence that he would not have persisted in that war, for, as he said to a friend shortly before he died,I have to go all the way with this one.He could not suffer a second Cuba and hope to maintain the appearance of Defender of the Free World at the ballot box. [Vidal United States p818]- 1967 Apr 4: M. L. King Jr.: `My government is the world's leading purveyor of violence.' BI · MCRW `Increasingly the role our nation has taken is the role of those who refuse to give up the privileges and pleasures that come from the immense profits of overseas investment.' TT
They must see Americans as strange liberators. The Vietnamese people proclaimed their own independence in 1945 after a combined French and Japanese occupation, and before the Communist revolution in China. They were led by Ho Chi Minh. Even though they quoted the American Declaration of Independence in their own document of freedom, we refused to recognize them. Instead, we decided to support France in its reconquest of her former colony. Our government felt then that the Vietnamese people were not
readyfor independence, and we again fell victim to the deadly Western arrogance that has poisoned the international atmosphere for so long. With that tragic decision we rejected a revolutionary government seeking self-determination, and a government that had been established not by China (for whom the Vietnamese have no great love) but by clearly indigenous forces that included some Communists. For the peasants this new government meant real land reform, one of the most important needs in their lives. For nine years following 1945 we denied the people of Vietnam the right of independence. For nine years we vigorously supported the French in their abortive effort to recolonize Vietnam.
Before the end of the war we were meeting eighty percent of the French war costs. Even before the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu, they began to despair of the reckless action, but we did not. We encouraged them with our huge financial and military supplies to continue the war even after they had lost the will. Soon we would be paying almost the full costs of this tragic attempt at recolonization.
After the French were defeated it looked as if independence and land reform would come again through the Geneva agreements. But instead there came the US, determined that Ho should not unify the temporarily divided nation, and the peasants watched again as we supported one of the most vicious modern dictators—our chosen man, Premier Diem. The peasants watched and cringed as Diem ruthlessly routed out all opposition, supported their extortionist landlords and refused even to discuss reunification with the north. The peasants watched as all this was presided over by US influence and then by increasing numbers of US troops who came to help quell the insurgency that Diem's methods had aroused. When Diem was overthrown they may have been happy, but the long line of military dictatorships seemed to offer no real change—especially in terms of their need for land and peace.
The only change came from America as we increased our troop commitments in support of governments which were singularly corrupt, inept and without popular support. All the while the people read our leaflets and received regular promises of peace and democracy—and land reform. Now they languish under our bombs and consider us—not their fellow Vietnamese—the real enemy. They move sadly and apathetically as we herd them off the land of their fathers into concentration camps where minimal social needs are rarely met. They know they must move or be destroyed by our bombs. So they go—primarily women and children and the aged.
They watch as we poison their water, as we kill a million acres of their crops. They must weep as the bulldozers roar through their areas preparing to destroy the precious trees. They wander into the hospitals, with at least twenty casualties from American firepower for one
Vietcong-inflicted injury. So far we may have killed a million of them—mostly children. They wander into the towns and see thousands of the children, homeless, without clothes, running in packs on the streets like animals. They see the children, degraded by our soldiers as they beg for food. They see the children selling their sisters to our soldiers, soliciting for their mothers. What do the peasants think as we ally ourselves with the landlords and as we refuse to put any action into our many words concerning land reform? What do they think as we test our latest weapons on them, just as the Germans tested out new medicine and new tortures in the concentration camps of Europe? Where are the roots of the independent Vietnam we claim to be building? Is it among these voiceless ones?
We have destroyed their two most cherished institutions: the family and the village. We have destroyed their land and their crops. We have cooperated in the crushing of the nation's only non-Communist revolutionary political force—the unified Buddhist church. We have supported the enemies of the peasants of Saigon. We have corrupted their women and children and killed their men. What liberators? MLK

Thomas Moorer, fmr JCS chair:mistaken identitydespite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.[It's] one of the classic all-American cover-ups.TS, JP, FThe attack in international waters followed over nine hours of close surveillance. Israeli pilots circled the ship at low level 13 times on eight different occasions before attacking. Radio operators in Spain, Lebanon, Germany and aboard the ship itself all heard the pilots reporting to their headquarters that this was an American ship. They attacked anyway…Fifteen years after the attack, an Israeli pilot [Evan Toni] approached Liberty survivors and then held extensive interviews with former Congressman Paul McCloskey about his role. According to this senior Israeli lead pilot, he recognized the Liberty as American immediately, so informed his headquarters, and was told to ignore the American flag and continue his attack. He refused to do so and returned to base, where he was arrested.
Later, a dual-citizen Israeli major told survivors that he was in an Israeli war room where he heard that pilot's radio report. The attacking pilots and everyone in the Israeli war room knew that they were attacking an American ship, the major said. He recanted the statement only after he received threatening phone calls from Israel.
The pilot's protests also were heard by radio monitors in the US Embassy in Lebanon. Then-US Ambassador to Lebanon Dwight Porter has confirmed this. Porter told his story to syndicated columnists Evans and Novak… WRMEA
As the attacks were going on, conversations between Israeli pilots were overheard by US Air Force officers in an EC121 surveillance plane overhead. The spy plane was spotted by Israeli jets, which were given orders to shoot it down. The American plane narrowly avoided the IDF missiles…After more than two hours of unremitting assault, the Israelis finally halted their attack. One of the torpedo boats approached the Liberty. An officer asked in English over a bullhorn:
Do you need any help? The wounded commander of the Liberty, Lt. William McGonagle, instructed the quartermaster to respond emphatically:Fuck you.CPThe claim that the ship was mistaken for an old Egyptian freighter is absurd. As an intelligence ship it was loaded with antennas and carried a large satellite dish on an elevated structure near the stern. It was four times as large as the old Egyptian freighter, and its identification numbers were painted on the bow in white letters 10 feet high. If the numbers couldn'tt be seen by the Israeli pilots, they could not have been missed by the torpedo boats that fired on the life boats deployed by the Liberty…a war crime. AIMEnnes recalls being unsettled by the numerous flights over the Liberty by Israeli reconnaissance planes, starting the previous night and continuing for a six-hour period preceding the assault. Trained US Navy observers counted a dozen overflights. Some were made by a lumbering, Star-of-David-marked Nord Noratlasflying boxcar, which pulled several times to within mast-clipping range—low enough for any Israeli pilot to see a vessel incapable of harming his country.Melvin Smith, senior enlisted intercept chief…overheard the pilots several times identify the flag as US and the ship for what she was. At that time, of course, Israel was a friend. Later, despite jamming of the ship's distress frequencies, and before all her transmitters were shot away, the Liberty's radio operators managed again to hear the attackers make a positive identification in the clear. Judge Cristol, conceding his newly released Israeli transcripts reveal one correct identification, states that they are confusing and mutually contradictory—typical of the
fog of war.Further, citing Ennes, he states that no Hebrew linguists were on board the spy ship, and that Israeli pilots would not have made unencrypted transmissions.Ennes acknowledges that no
officialHebrew linguists were on board, but he points out that at least one of the doomed NSA men, Russian/Arabic linguist Allen Blue, understood Hebrew. As for the jamming, Ennes, quoting Chief Radioman Wayne Smith and an article in Proceedings, also notes that the ship could not have been misidentified, because the frequencies jammed were peculiar to the US Navy. Liberty Radioman RichardRockySturman also recalls that he and other technicians heard the radio jamming. Judge Cristol rejects such accounts asmyth.USNIIsraeli spoksmen [sic] have insisted the Israeli pilots had confused the Liberty with El Quseir, a 1920s-vintage Egyptian horse cavalry transport said to have been in the area…El Quseir lacked the US ship's unique add-ons, which included…an 18-foot-wide satellite dish nearly as tall as the smokestack and a wading-pool-sized microwave dish. The ship bristled, as well, with video-capture antennae and other exotica found on no other vessel in the world, much less decrepit Arab transport ships. Ancillary reasons theRichard Helms (DCI)deliberate schoolrejects Judge Cristol's El Quseir defense are as follows: The Egyptian craftIn addition, the Egyptian Naval Attache's office in Washington says El Quseir was painted silver, not the Liberty's battleship grey. It is highly unlikely, NSA officials on board and off explain, that Israel's hypervigilant spy agencies would be unacquainted with these facts. This suggests a question: why assault so concertedly an unthreatening old Egyptian transport? USNI

Martin Luther King had been murdered on April 4 and Robert F. Kennedy had been murdered on June 6.- 1968 Jan:
Something else was going on that would only come to light later. Through most of the 1960s, the US congress had imposed a ban on the sale of arms to both Israel and Jordan. But at the time of the Liberty attack, the Pentagon (and its allies in the White House and on the Hill) was seeking to have this proscription overturned. The top brass certainly knew that any evidence of a deliberate attack on a US Navy ship by the IDF would scuttle their plans. So they hushed it up.In January 1968, the arms embargo on Israel was lifted and the sale of American weapons began to flow. By 1971, Israel was buying $600 million of American-made weapons a year. Two years later the purchases topped $3 billion. Almost overnight, Israel had become the largest buyer of US-made arms and aircraft.
Perversely, then, the IDF's strike on the Liberty served to weld the US and Israel together, in a kind of political and military embrace. Now, every time the IDF attacks defenseless villages in Gaza and the West Bank with F-16s and Apache helicopters, the Palestinians quite rightly see the bloody assaults as a joint operation, with the Pentagon as a hidden partner. Yes, yes, yes, said the Humphreyites. Kissinger never came through on the offer, but it was enough to give him an intimate relationship with Democratic officials at the Paris peace talks, where US and Vietnam negotiators were arguing behind closed doors over how to end the war.Meanwhile, Kissinger had approached the Nixon camp and offered his services as a spy within the Humphrey circle. The offer was of course accepted. Richard Holbrooke, who was on Johnson's negotiating team in Paris, says,
Henry was the only person outside the government we were authorized to discuss the negotiations with. We trusted him. It is not stretching the truth to say that the Nixon campaign had a secret source within the US negotiating team.A few days before the election, Vietnamese negotiators indicated a willingness to make concessions in order to get a bombing halt, and Johnson prepared to give it to them. Kissinger learned about it early enough to give Nixon several hours warning—enough time to let Nixon announce that the Democrats were about to
play politics with the war.It blunted the positive effects of the bombing halt, and Nixon squeaked into office…Kissinger got what he wanted, the job as NSA…But, ironically, Nixon never forgot Kissinger's treacherous conduct toward the Democrats, and he always harbored doubts… TO

The verbatim proceedings at the Shaw trial, as well as all of the detailed events for the two years that the Federal Government successfully delayed the trial, were faithfully printed in both the Herald and the Picayune. While you and I, dear reader, were treated to a highly biased account for three years concerning events in New Orleans by Time magazine, Newsweek, US News, New York Times, NBC, CBS, ABC, UP, AP, etc., the average New Orleans citizen was well aware that the Justice Department, under both Ramsey Clark and John Mitchell, was responsible for continually delaying the trial. (You and I were fed the impression that Garrison delayed the trial.)(@hit I feel stupid. I knew whose AG Clark was, and yet I never twigged he'd've been part of the JFK coverup until '03 Oct 31, when I read this. OTOH, I now have a good idea why Garrison kept getting reëlected.)Mr. New Orleans citizen, let's call him Joe, knew that Shaw's lawyers were paid by the CIA. You and I were told that Shaw paid his lawyers a lot of money and suffered financially because of it.
Joe knew that the FBI was looking for Shaw under his alias, Clay Bertrand, before lawyer Dean Andrews ever mentioned the name associated with Lee Harvey Oswald just before he was killed by Jack Ruby. You and I were told that Andrews fabricated the name Clay Bertrand out of whole cloth, and no mention was made to us of the FBI's search.
Joe knew that twelve people saw Clay Shaw together with Oswald and David Ferrie on many occasions, exchanging money on two occasions. You and I were led to believe by Time and The New York Times that only three people saw them together and that the three were not credible witnesses.
Joe knows how Garrison was hounded and framed by the Justice Department in a fake pinball rap. More importantly, he knows the government did not want Regis Kennedy, FBI agent, and Pierre Finck, Army doctor at the JFK autopsy, to testify at the trial. Finck's testimony, however, was printed in the Times Picayune but not in Time magazine. He said that an Army general gave orders during the autopsy at Bethesda Naval Hospital. The unidentified general told Finck and the other doctors not to probe the President's neck wound. We did not read about this or hear about it. TA123

Herbert Krugman, who later became manager of public-opinion research at GE HQ in CT, decided to try to discover what goes on physiologically in the brain of a person watching TV. He elicited the coöperation of a 22-year-old secretary and taped a single electrode to the back of her head…(Conclusion: Give the sheep 300 TV channels, encourage illiteracy, and you've got their minds by the short n curlies.)Flicking on the TV, Krugman began monitoring the brain-waves of the subject. What he found through repeated trials was that within about 30 s, the brain-waves switched from predominantly beta waves, indicating alert and conscious attention, to predominantly alpha waves, indicating an unfocused, receptive lack of attention: the state of aimless fantasy and daydreaming below the threshold of consciousness. When Krugman's subject turned to reading through a magazine, beta waves reappeared, indicating that conscious and alert attentiveness had replaced the daydreaming state.
What surprised Krugman, who had set out to test some McLuhanesque hypotheses about the nature of TV-viewing, was how rapidly the alpha-state emerged. Further research revealed that the brain's left hemisphere, which processes information logically and analytically, tunes out while the person is watching TV. This tuning-out allows the right hemisphere of the brain, which processes information emotionally and noncritically, to function unimpeded. DO
