AARS - Army Amateur Radio System

TYPE: Radio Amateurs (H)
ORG: H-102

OVERVIEW:

As you can read in [1] Amateur Radio in the USA was created and supported solery because there was lack of experienced radiooperators for Army and Navy, and this is generally true. US Army always had very bad radiooperators
(especially comparing with Navy) and Radioamateurs were used to fill the gap. In 1930s both linear amateur callsigns and W callsigns were used. Amateur callsigns on amateur bands, while WLx or WLxx callsigns outside amateur
bands. AARS stations handled messages in almost the same way as commercial or government stations, both on amateur bands and on War Department Radio Network frequencies. After the war AARS became MARS (Military Auxiliary
Radio Service), but times already changed and CW traffic was much lower in this organisation.
