Note: Getting exposure on a somewhat "new" concept as
the Games Workshop Hobby in the local scene is a rare thing for
us here in the Philippines.
To
get one in a newspaper for our niche game is thus always a great
thing. Here is an article on one of our stores local players in
its entirety from the Philippine Daily Inquirer dated August 9,
2003]
ROWELL
Ace Obedencia at 12 is like a young David pitted against a bunch
of older Goliaths. He Battles it out in Warhammer 40K, a strategy
game where armies "fight" each other using a complicated
set of rules and dice.
"I
play with older guys. Sometimes they're really hard on me."
Ace doesn't complain though. "It's fair because my army is
hitting them. So their army has to run after me."
Ace
says playing strategy games enhances his mind. He started his
hobby because he liked the "figs" - short for figures
- of a game called Battlefleet Gothic.
Ace's
Army
"When
I read the rule book, I didn't understand it," admits Ace.
"I went to Hobby Cafe to ask someone to teach me." He
then started building up his own army of Tau.
"The
special ability of the Tau is that they can shoot far and hard,"
he explains.
Ace
hand-paints each piece himself. His army includes fire warriors,
stealth suits, hammerhead tanks and more.
The
freshman of O.B. Montessori, Las Piñas saves up his allowance
and sometimes sells his old toys to keep his expensive hobby going.
Together
with Wesley, his second oldest brother, Ace makes up his own game
with plastic toy soldiers. They set up a "Battle of Omaha"
scenario in a spare room using styrofoam. They also carve and
paint tanks from the same material.
"I
hope other kids get interested in the game," says Ace. "It
makes the wheels of the mind turn."
