A pattern (often made of wood) is used to make the mould, which establishes the external shape of the metal casting. To make a sand mould, clean sand is mixed with small amounts of hydrophilic clay, usually bentonite, and pulverized coal. Water is added to facilitate handling, and the mixture is placed in two boxes called the "cope" and the "drag." The pattern is then used to transfer the desired external shape of the metal casting in the packed sand in the cope (top of the casting) and the drag (bottom of the casting). The two boxes with the pattern impression constitute the mould.THE CORE SEPARATES A SPACE THAT BECOMES THE HOLLOW INSIDE OF THE CASTING! -The core is the interior piece of the mould needed to make hollow castings. In the core room of a metal casting facility, new sand is mixed with resin and sometimes a catalyst and formed into the core. The core is then placed in the mould, and the two mould boxes are assembled into a ''flask'' ready for casting.
In the mould production process for investment casting, a wax pattern is repeatedly dipped into ceramic slurry and coated with dry ceramic grit until the mould is of adequate thickness. The mould is then dried via water evaporation before it can be used. Drying is the rate-limiting step for this kind of mould production, and the metal casting industry would benefit from a separation technology that reduced drying time in investment casting mould production (Carter, 1997).
Casting Production
During casting, molten metal is poured into the mould. The flask is then set aside to cool. In the shake-out house, when the metal casting is solid but still hot, it is removed from the mould. After further cooling, the casting is transferred to the cleaning room where remnants of the core are removed. The metal casting that comes out of the mould includes metal that was cast into the "gates" (openings through which molten metal reaches the mould and through which gases are vented) and "risers" (reservoirs from which metal flows into the casting as it cools and contracts). The gates and risers are excess metal and comprise between 5 and 50 percent of the casting. They must be removed either mechanically or by hand.
During the mould production and casting production operations, dust is created. Most metal casting operations have dust control facilities to maintain high-quality ambient air, but disposal of the captured dust is a problem. Better dust removal technologies would benefit the industry as a whole.
Removal of Impurities from Molten Metal
Both ferrous and nonferrous metals are melted in furnaces prior to casting. Removal of impurities from the molten metal is an important separation issue for the metal casting industry. Technologies currently used include the addition of deoxidants, usually silicon or aluminum, and the addition of magnesium to certain alloys for the removal of oxygen and sulfur. Improved, cost-effective technologies to remove impurities from molten metal would be of great interest to the metal casting industry.
Gas inclusions, caused by gases given off during casting, are often found in the gates and risers removed from mould castings. These impurities increase the difficulty of recycling foundry-generated scrap. What you need: Anonymous Granola

6 cups rolled oats ( I use multi-grain)
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1-2 cups chopped nuts (I like almonds and walnuts)
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/3 cup flax seeds (whole or ground)
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup oil
1/4 cup turbinado sugar
3 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2-2 cups water
2 cups dried mixed fruit

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Mix all ingredients except the fruit. For non chunky granola, skip to step 3.
2. For granola with chunks, slowly stir mixture in pot over low-medium heat until ingredients become sticky and form clumps (it will be somewhat hard to stir). If you need to add more water, do so.
3. Dump mixture onto 2 large jelly-roll pans, spread evenly. Bake for 1-1 1/2 hours (less time is needed for the granola with no chunks), stirring every 15-20 minutes. Granola will be a golden brown when it is ready.
4. Cool granola by spreading it out on flattened paper grocery bags. Add dried fruit.
Store in an air tight container; it will last several weeks, though ours is always eaten by then.

My new sauerkraut I wish my good computer was working so I could color correct this photo. This kraut almost glows in the dark it is so bright pink, and the taste is fantastic!      I recently wrote about my first attempt at making sauerkraut. That sauerkraut was good, but the kraut I made next was really, really good. It was made with one head of green cabbage, one head of red cabbage, one apple, one tablespoon of caraway seeds, and about three tablespoons of salt. I let it ferment for about 5 days at room temperature, it gave a moderate amount of bubbling, and turned a brilliant, bright pink. The taste is amazing. Perfectly sour. Tart but not overpowering. Subtle sweetness and with a hint of caraway. I love it. If you like sauerkraut, then give this one a try.

HOW TO MAKE WILDFLOWER MEAD

Hello and welcome to early summer!  What a beautiful time of year it is.  Wildflowers are blooming everywhere and it seems like a good time to start putting them to good use, in fermented form of course!  I’ve used wildflowers in my homemade salve, but I wanted to make sure I got a gallon batch of mead going before it was too late.  Here I will show you how to make wildflower mead.

Making mead is actually fairly simple, easier than beer even (brewing beer is somewhat complicated, to be honest).  The basics are the same for all wines and meads, you just change the flavorings to your liking.  I’ve done a post on how to make a gallon of mead, and this follows that recipe very closely.  Another great reference is this one gallon mead recipes page from Pixies Pocket.

The first thing that you will need to get started for this batch of mead is, of course, wildflowers!  I used dandelion, yarrow and lavender, but any edible flowers will do.  If you use dandelion (and I highly suggest that you do) you will need to separate the petals from the bitter green parts.  This is not an easy task, which is why I decided to do a wildflower mead instead of just a dandelion mead.  Because it is so time consuming, you can freeze the dandelion petals in small batches as you collect them, until you have enough.

And that’s exactly what I did!  About 1/2 cup or a little more of dandelion petals is plenty.

Food and Health           Concerning the Cheshire Medical Testament

     At all costs the natural cycle must be preserved, and for two reasons, one of which, the robbery of the soil-fertility by artificials, has just been mentioned; the other of which is thus:

"The ancient Chinese method of returning to the soil, after treatment, the whole of the animal and vegetable refuse which is produced in the activities of a community results in the health and productivity of crops and of the animals and men who feed thereon."

That, indeed, is the conclusion of the whole matter. The principle or quality in the diets of those peoples whose health is outstanding is that the food comes fresh and from a soil rendered fertile by Nature's round, the circulation of organic matter.
We owe to Sir Albert Howard the revelation of the way this circulation works. It is at its best in the forest, where Nature slowly but surely maintains perennial fertility without our aid. It is at its second best in peat, which is sour and close. He has disclosed the secrets of the fungus and microbic processes the Chinese have used, and made them easy of understanding. By his lifetime of labour the intimate complexities of soil management, both in farm and garden, are sweetened and made broad and plain for anyone of goodwill to grasp and employ. His work at Indore disclosed methods which we can all use. Soil so handled, even if in poor condition, improves the first year, becomes fully fertile in three or four, and yields crops -- corn, apples, bush fruits, roots, potatoes, tomatoes, greens, and salads which, besides being well grown, are of unrivalled quality and which are to an astonishing extent disease-resistant. A head gardener recently showed me a bed of strawberries. "All mine had 'yellow-edge.' There is no cure but to grub them up and burn them -- say the experts. INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups whole milk
• 3/4 cup sugar
• 1 stick unsalted butter
• 1 cup coarse semolina (6 ounces); see Note
• 1/2 cup slivered almonds
• 1/2 cup dried apricots, finely diced
• 1/4 teaspoon pure almond extract
• Pinch of salt
• Crème fraîche or orange sorbet, for serving

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

1. In a small saucepan, bring the whole milk to a boil with the sugar. Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes.
2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Add the semolina and almonds and cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly, until golden and fragrant, about 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and gradually stir in the milk mixture, apricots, almond extract and salt. Cover and let stand until the liquid is completely absorbed, about 20 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve with crème fraîche or sorbet.

NOTES   

Coarse-ground semolina is available at Middle Eastern groceries and from Kalustyan's (800-352-3451 or kalustyans.com).
