The individual artistes should really
be given the credit for introducing Pakistan to popular modern music.
It was them after all who went ahead in previously "unchartered
waters" (in Pakistan at least) and tried to show what they were
capable of, and what potential Pakistan's new generation held.
Nazia Hassan and her brother Zoheb were undoubtedly
the pioneers of pop music in Pakistan (some would even say South
Asia). Never before had music like that been heard or played in
Pakistan. Sadly, Nazia Hassan departed from this sphere on the 13th
of August, 2000, and she will truly be missed.
Dozens of other talented musicians followed in their
footsteps, and Pakistani pop was created.
It was during the late 80's when numerous bands
entered the Pakistani music scene. It seemed the best way to combine
the talents of a few individuals and release it under a single name.
It started off with the Vital Signs. Their ever-popular
"Dil Dil Pakistan" topped charts all over the nation.
Not long after their success, came other groups hoping to "set
the trend" as well. Pakistan was introduced to the likes of
Strings and Junoon. The exponential growth of bands and groups that
followed was unbelievable.
