Jack J. Wells was born and raised in the horse and cattle country of Oklahoma. He received an education of his western subject matter on a first hand basis. Ranching, rodeoing and horse trading were the family business. Jack and his older brother, Justin, both began drawing about the same time they began riding and walking. This early sibling rivalry helped quicken the development of their artistic talents. They would often draw their own comic books just for fun.
Jack's formal training has since come mostly from the school of being there. From rodeos to horse shows to art shows, he has competed and shown his artwork all over the country. These travels include exhibitions at the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Artist's Association's "SHOWCASE", in Las Vegas, NV, during the National Finals Rodeo; the All American Quarter Horse Congress, in Columbus, Ohio; the ProRodeo Hall of Fame Museum in Colorado Springs, CO; the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO; the PRCAA Cheyenne Showcase, during the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo, in Cheyenne, WY; the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo in Houston, TX; the Dodge City RoundUp Rodeo in Dodge City,KS; and many more from Los Angeles to New York.
In 1985, Wells had the honor of co-founding the Professional Rodeo-Cowboy Artists Association, (PRCAA). Every member of this association is a current, active (or retired) member of a major professional rodeo organization, as well as being a qualified professional artist. Wells was inducted as a charter member and elected director the first year, a position he has held every year since then.
Wells has had more than 100 pieces of art published as limited edition prints, posters, magazine illustrations and program covers. From miniatures to murals, his works have been shown and collected world wide by museums, corporations and private individuals.Wells works with watercolors, oils, acrylics, gouache, tempera, pen and ink, pencils, pastels and charcoal. His style is realism and his subject matter is cowboy and western in nature. He is proud to say that most all of his paintings and drawings come from his very own experiences.
