From the River

A View of Gravesend showing St George's Church and Windmill Hill from a drawing by W H Bartlett 1837

A wider view of the very busy river in 1837 is shown with two paddle steamers in the foreground and the Clifton Baths to the right. The two steamers are flying the pennant of the Star Steam Packet Company and one is named "Vesper". The first steam-ship service to London commenced in1815, and in 1829 passengers paid 1/6d (71/2p) per head. However the 650 year-old practice of river passage to London declined in the 1850's when the new railway offered a more attractive alternative.                                                                      Eric R Swain "O' Famous Kent"
