Jilly's Genealogy

Sandling Road, Maidstone

The premises on the far left is No.7, a tobacconist shop, in the tenancy of John Tanner Durrell for at least 40 years. Second from left is No. 6 where my great great grandfather Stephen Barker lived from before 1841 until he died in 1870. He was a Master Tailor. The right hand property (most of the photograph) is "The Phoenix".
Sometime prior to 1841
Frances Faithorn inherited No. 6 (and several other properties) from her husband Stephen who had run No. 6 as a greengrocery. According to her Will of 1857, Frances left No. 6 to her great nephew Stephen Barker.  Also in 1857 No. 7 was bequeathed to Henry Smitherman by his grandfather Richard Smitherman.  In Stephen Barker's Will of 1870 he left No. 6 to his son Herbert Stephen Barker and No.7 to his daughter Josephine Julia Barker (my great grandmother) and she in turn directed that the property to be sold for the benefit of her son and daughter in 1935.  Who owned No. 7 between 1857 and 1870??
So No. 6 Sandling Road was in the same family for approximately 100 years.
