History In A Box
Regular Packaging
Herpa's chosen design was the black box, the first models representing Lufthansa coming in this packaging. The printing on the boxes stating '1:500 Metall', with the Herpa logo, and wings title being printed in red. For a while some of these early black boxes even had a list of all available models in the range printed on the back of the box. (See picture 1.)
After the first year's production, Herpa switched to the familiar white box design. The first version of this still carried the red Herpa logo and wings title on the front of the box, plus an airline logo. (See picture 2.)The boxes, although retaining this format only changed slightly over the coming years with the Herpa and Wings logos being cut from the front of the box, and four logos became two. (See picture 3.)
In 1996 a small change to the Wings logo now appearing in black. 1998 was the year Herpa introduced its 1:200 and 1:400 scales, so a blue 1:500 was printed on the boxes from then on. (See picture 4.)
No major changes have taken place since then. The introduction of the new generation models in 2001 means the boxes for these models now carry a large new generation logo. (See picture 5.) The 'Yesterday Series' featuring airline liveries that no longer fly today, are packaged in a silver box. (See picture 6.)
Promotional Packaging
Specially designed boxes for airline promotional models are influenced by the airlines involved. Their choice of box colour and company logo are quite different from the regular release boxes. More often than not, there is no Herpa logo used. The metal tin has to be the best of all the packaging, this type looks very classy, and is of high quality. (See pictures 7, 8, 9.)
Exclusive Series Packaging
These boxes are used for some of Herpa's special editions. They come in a large cardboard box, inside there is a clear plastic display case, the model also has a base featuring the model name, and depicting an airfield surface on which the model can stand. Many of these special editions also come with a 1:500 scale truck or vehicle. (See picture 10.)

Advent  Calander Packaging
The first Herpa advent calander was introduced for Christmas 2001. This new type of packaging contained four exclusive models, and is limited to 2500 examples. I would imagine that this will become a regular tradition in the years ahead. (See picture 11.)
