Quote from book: -
"For
many years, following the electrification of the suburban services,
Southern Region continued to run steam-haul express trains from
Waterloo. This is a photographic record of the wide variety of types
which were at work in the 1950s and 1960s in the area from Waterloo to
Weymouth, Salisbury and Portsmouth Not only are famous expresses, such
the 'Bournemouth Belle' and the 'Atlantic Coast Express' to be seen
herein, but also included are the more humble, but no less interesting,
cross country and branch passenger trains, together with the vital
freight and parcels traffic of the South and West."
The book is a delightful record in pictures of the
trains of this period mostly showing the engines and the carriages in
black and white. Each plate is accompanied by description.

Quote from book: -
"This
nostalgic, evocative book looks back to the world of the narrow gauge
railway when it was in its heyday. During his employment with the London
and North Eastern Railway from 1924 to 1928, Humphrey Household
travelled around many of the narrow gauge lines, armed with notebook and
camera, and was thus uniquely placed to capture the particular qualities
of the lines and the locomotives and the lives of the railwaymen who
worked them. Based upon his collection of photographs, many never
published before, and the original notes he took at the time, this is a
superb record of the narrow gauge railways at their peak, and the
railway stations which were still then an important part of village
life. Full of anecdote and detail, it tells the history of the lines and
also discusses the subsequent battles for their preservation and their
future development."
A wonderful visual record of railways
in Wales at the beginning of the last century and would also be of
interest to those whose families were involved with the railways in
Wales. |
