Inductive Definitions
Compile a list of common words which can function as more than one part of speech - for example, "break" can be a noun, verb, or adjective.  Each student must choose one word from the list, and no two students may choose the same word.

In class (so you can verify that they aren't using dictionaries) they will produce an "inductive" definition of the word.  In other words, they will figure out the definition just by what they already know about the word, or by inducing the meaning from context.  They are to think of as many definitions as they can.  For each definition, they will be required to use the word appropriately in a sentence.  Encourage them to first define the word seriously, then include at least one "spoof" definition and humorous sentence to go along with it.  They may choose to illustrate their definitions as well.

This assignment will be graded for effort. Post the students' work on the wall outside the classroom for about a week, then collect the definitions into a packet and make it available in the class library for everyone's perusal.
