"Unsent Letters"
Lesson Plan
As part of our study of British literature, I would like to spend some time examining Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.  One of the major themes is misunderstanding and the pain it causes the book's characters.  After reading the book and going through a number of activites and classroom discussions, we will discuss the various lines of tension between characters and instances of misunderstanding.
For homework, the students will write an "unsent letter" from one character to another that either clarifies a misunderstanding or takes out that character's angst on another character.  For example, a student might choose to write a letter from Catherine to Heathcliff explaining her true feelings and the reasons for her actions.  This letter might be intended to stop Heathcliff from running away and prevent Catherine's marriage to another man in his absence.
