How Do I Make a Game?

I strongly recommend starting at the Kongregate Forums topic Making Games. This is where I started my Flash game programming journey. Some of the early posts on this forum are older, but there is still a lot of useful information. One of the books suggested is Flash Game Programming for Dummies. This is certainly a dated book and teaches ActionScript 2.0, which I'll discuss later, but there is value in the game ideas it teaches. There are a lot of ideas that can be picked up in this book.

I started learning Flash game programming using ActionScript 2.0. This is the name of the programming language, like Java or C++. Flash is used in conjunction with this language to create the games. As seen in the forum there are other programs that can be used with ActionScript 2.0 to make your games. Given the age of the language, I highly recommend to learn ActionScript 3.0 which is the newest version of the language. ActionScript 3.0 is quite a bit different than 2.0 in my experience so learning 2.0 first won't make it easier to learn 3.0 later.
