Welcome, Classmates and Friends

Maple Heights Class of 69

IMPORTANT NOTICE: YAHOO HAS ANNOUNCED THAT ALL GEOCITIES WEBSITES (INCLUDING THIS ONE) WILL BE ELIMINATED OCTOBER 26, 2009. THIS SITE WILL CONTINUE TO BE UPDATED UNTIL THEN, BUT IT WILL DISAPPEAR. IF YOU WANT TO CREATE YOUR OWN WEBSITE (OTHER THAN WITH YAHOO GEOCITIES), YOU ARE WELCOME TO COPY THIS INFORMATION AND MAINTAIN IT ON YOUR SITE. YOU ARE ALSO WELCOME TO PRINT A COPY OF THIS INFORMATION FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE.

Welcome to the "unofficial" website of the Maple Heights Class of 1969. The information or opinions posted here do not represent any official pronouncement of the class or any other person or group. It's just the words that classmates and friends have submitted for sharing with others.

This is a website that is open to anyone seeking to connect with the Class of 1969. If anyone whose information is included on this site is uncomfortable with being part of an open website, please notify me, and I will be happy to remove any information you don't want posted in your listing. You can browse, add, delete, laugh, share, whatever you like. This is your information for you, and what you put here is up to you. Just remember - I don't take any responsibility for what happens once you make yourself available to everyone. If you get inundated with a pile of e-mails from old and new friends wanting to share memories and make new ones, don't blame me!

This website is a place for people to post information to share with the people they graduated from high school with. From the majority of the messages I receive, it's obvious that the existence and format of this website is appreciated by those who enjoy reading about the successes of the people they grew up with.

If on the other hand, you're someone who doesn't want to be a part of that, no one is forcing you to participate. If your life has events that you don't want to share, then don't disclose them. If you don't want to remind people of the hairdo you had in 1969, then let me know and your yearbook picture will be deleted from the site. If you want to be left alone, that's fine. Just let me know and all traces of you will be removed - classmates can still find out about you by looking in their yearbooks and the memory books that have been distributed at the various class reunions.

I encourage all to enjoy the posted information in a spirit of friendship and comradery borne of the experiences we shared back at MHHS. If that's not your style, that's up to you, but please don't try to mess things up for others.

----------

In the summer of 2006, I visited the area and, upon the suggestion of a close friend, went to the Little Red Schoolhouse Museum at Rockside and Dunham. It's been open for more than 40 years, but it was my first time visiting and I loved it. I wholeheartedly recommend that anyone who went to school in Maple Heights or just lived in the city for any length of time, visit the museum. You'll see a lot of familiar things.

One of the most interesting collections was the many class photos, displayed on several walls. I recognized lots of faces and last names ... even though the people in the pictures were the parents of the people I went to school with, and not my classmates themselves. And there were several of my teachers in the class pictures, back when they were of high school age and had hair.

The museum has lots of household implements used in early Maple Heights, yearbooks, scrapbooks, and everything else you'd like to see in a historical museum, plus one more special thing. That's the curator, John Straka. We talked for about an hour and could have gone longer - he knows everything about Maple Heights. I told him my address when I lived there, and he told me about my house, my neighbors, and so much more. I've never had such a case of nostalgia.

John is undoubtedly the best "exhibit" in the museum, so don't miss talking to him. Be sure to take his quiz and search for answers among the artifacts (When was St. Wenceslas founded? ... When did Maple Heights become a village? ... and more). Get enough correct answers and receive a prize.

John's also written a book which is on sale at the museum. It's called The Way it Was, and it's a collection of articles he wrote for the Maple Heights Press. Most cover the first half of the 20th Century, but even those who moved to Maple Heights later (I did in 1955), there's a lot of stuff in there that will jog your memories and make you smile.

The Little Red Schoolhouse - it's worth the trip.

----------

Maple Heights has changed tremendously since 1969. Then, the city had a population of a little more than 49,000. Now, according to the 2000 census, only 26,156 live there. The schools have also changed drastically. For profiles of the student bodies at the remaining schools, go to www.greatschools.net/modperl/browse_district/106/oh.

----------

I thought it might be interesting to see what's happened to the members of the Class of 1969, so I went back into the information we provided to the various reunion committees and some more recent items submitted for posting on this website. Based on that, I've compiled the information shown below.

For cities of residence, if we haven't heard from someone since before the 20th class reunion, it's assumed that we don't know where they live. For colleges, only 34 alumni mentioned where they attended (several went to more than one college, so they're all listed), although many more did indicate that they earned their degrees. For professions, the list includes what retirees and deceased class members did when they were still part of the workforce. Unfortunately, many people listed the names of their employers, but didn't say what they did there (so they're not included in the list). For kids, stepchildren are also included. For leisure time activities, some people listed several, so they're all listed.

A total of 547 people are listed. Some did not graduate with us for various reasons (usually their families moved away before 1969), but asked to be included so they could be contacted by old school friends. Here is what they said:

OTHER GRADUATING CLASSES

We're not the only ones who are interested in sharing information over the internet. The website for the Class of 1956 is at http://www.geocities.com/mhhs56. You can access biographical and contact information for the Class of 1970 at http://www.geocities.com/drunevitch/MHHS70bio.html. The Class of 1960 site is at http://www.mhhs60.org, and I'm in touch with representatives of several other classes (and people at nearby schools) who just might be doing the same. As I become aware of other classes' websites and reunion announcements, links will be posted on the Alumni e-mail list (see link below). If you hear of any, please let me know.

.

I can put your current picture with you biographical information. Just mail me a wallet-size (it will appear larger on your computer screen) photo of yourself or your family, along with a stamped return envelope so I can send it back to you when I'm done with it.

I've put on the photos I already have for all of us (mostly from reunions or the 1969 yearbook). Unfortunately, most are black-and-white copies of copies of photos - if you have the originals, please send them to me. Your classmates will appreciate it the enhanced clarity that will result.

If you don't want your picture to appear on the website, please let me know as soon as possible. If you've already had your printed information deleted, no picture will appear unless you request it.

A NOTE REGARDING ALUMNI-FINDING WEBSITES

There are websites available for listing your name and some limited information, to make it easier for others to find you. Six that are set up by high school graduating classes are HighSchoolAlumni.com, ClassMates.com, PlanetAlumni.com, Gradfinder.com, Schoolnews.com and Alumni.net. Several of us have registered for one or more of them. We can look at the lists of registrants and see who else is there, but to actually access the others' e-mail addresses (or send messages to them and only find out their addresses if they write back) on some you have to pay a membership fee. I finally broke down and paid the fee for ClassMates.com, opening up the opportunity to contact over 2000 other Maple Heights graduates. I opted not to renew that paid membership after the first year, but if you look at the lists of graduates (for any high school), don't see them on the Maple alumni list (see link below) elsewhere on this website, and would like to send a message, you might find that fee worth your while. It's a cheap way to get in touch with old friends.
