Sum of The Parts Quote

[Taken from a Usenet posting to alt.quotations by Mark Brader].

Euclid's axioms were divided into two groups, 5 "postulates" and 5 "common notions". The text as given in Heath's edition (published by Dover) is as follows (modulo my improper transliteration).

For the Postulates:

  1. Nitestho apo pantos semeion epi pan semeion eutheian grammen agagein.
  2. Kai peperasmenen eutheian kata to suneches ep eutheias ekbalein.
  3. Kai panti kentro kai diastemati kuklon graphesthai.
  4. Kai pasas tas orthas gonias isas allelais einai.
  5. Kai ean eis duo eutheias eutheia empiptousa tas entos kai epi ta auta mere gonias duo orthon elassonas poie, ekballomenas tas duo eutheais ep apeiron sumpiptein, eph a mere eisin ai ton duo orthon elassones.

Let the following be postulated:

  1. (It is possible) To draw a straight line from any [lit. every] point to any point.
  2. To produce a finite straight line continuously in a straight line.
  3. To describe a circle with any centre and distance.
  4. That all right angles are equal to one another.
  5. That, if a straight line falling on two straight lines make [the sum of] the interior angles on the same side less than two right angles, the two straight lines, if produced indefinitely, meet on that side on which are the angles less than the two right angles.

The bracketed interpolations are mine, in some cases based on Heath's remarks. "Make" isn't a typo; Heath uses the subjunctive here.

And the Common Notions:

  1. Ta to auto isa kai allelois estin isa.
  2. Kai ean isois isa prostethe, ta ola estin isa.
  3. Kai ean apo ison isa aphairethe, ta kataleipomena estin isa.
  4. Kai ta epharmoxonta ep allela isa allelois estin.
  5. Kai to olon tou merous meixon [estin].
  1. Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another.
  2. If equals be added to equals, the wholes are equal.
  3. If equals be subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal.
  4. Things which coincide with one another are equal to one another.
  5. The whole is greater than the part.

This time the bracketed interpolation is like that in Heath. [...]

Fermat's Last Theorem

Cubem autem in duos cubos, aut quadratoquadratum in duos quadratoquadratos, et generaliter nullam in infinitum ultra quadratum potestatem in duos eiusdem nominis fas est dividere.

It is impossible for a cube to be written as a sum of two cubes or a fourth power to be written as the sum of two fourth powers or, in general, for any number which is a power greater than the second to be written as a sum of two like powers.

Cuius rei demonstrationem mirabilem sane detexi hanc marginis exiguitas non caperet.
