History

Everton win the Championship with a record points total (90), and a record 13 point winning margin. They almost complete a treble as they win the Cup Winners Cup but lose in the FA Cup final.

Both League Cup finalists are relegated. Norwich City become the only club to win a major trophy and be relegated in the same season.

Liverpool reach the European Cup final for the second year running. Serious and fatal crowd trouble at the game leads to all English clubs being banned from European competition for several years. This had been Liverpool's 21st consecutive season in Europe, a record.

Stoke City's 17 points is the lowest number in a 22 club League.
