History

The League is reduced to 20 clubs.

In injury time of the last game of the season, Arsenal score a goal beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield. This win gives Arsenal the same number of points as Liverpool and the same goal difference. Arsenal win the Championship because they have scored 6 goals more. This is the closest Championship finish in the history of the League. The Liverpool v Arsenal game had been postponed from earlier in the season and was being played after the FA Cup final which Liverpool had won. For the second season running Liverpool are denied the League and FA Cup double by a London club.
