Joseph Newcomb removed with his parents to Cornwallis, at the age of nine
years. After his marriage he lived in different parts of Cornwallis, but
finally settled at Pero, about three miles inside of Cape Blomedon. He was a
farmer; and was interred upon his farm by the side of his wife. He once owned
a lot in Cornwallis drawn by his grandfather's brother, Benjamin Newcomb, but
exchanged it for the one on which he died, a farm which was later owned by his
grandson, David Harris Newcomb.
One well acquainted with Mr. Newcomb wrote: "He was of kindly disposition,
affectionate in his nature, religiously disposed, moral in his habits, rigidly
honest in his dealings - traits of the Newcomb race." An incident occurred in
the later years of his life which marks the estimation in which his integrity
was held. His sons John and Daniel W. had built two schooners, and Mr. Newcomb
and his son Mayhew were indebted for the rigging and supplies to a firm in
Halifax. Both vessels were cast away, and as a consequence they were called
upon for the money, sued, and writs of execution issued. The time allowed by
law having expired, they presented themselves to the sheriff at the jail,
taking with them their shoemakers' kits, at which business they had become
quite expert. The sheriff refused to receive them, saying that the jail was
made for rogues, not for such as they; that when he wanted them he would call
for them. At the end of six or seven years they paid off the debts of 300 or
400 pounds, principal and interest.
