Requiem
ORIGINAL POSTING: 10/03: I'm doing a version of the Requiem dress for my first reproduction. I love all of Arwen's costumes, every single one, but this one really is good for me. I guess it's good that I too have a fair complexion with really dark hair and green eyes, and that I found this miraculous grey-blue [more blue, though :)] stretch velvet for real cheap AND that I got the last 3.5 yards in the store. For the lower sleeve, I got a few yards of glitter organza, but i might need a few more and layer the sleeves, because it's a lot more sheer than the original. I finished beading one sleeve, I'm workin on the other as of now, and am waiting to adjust for my neckline for when I get a good pattern for actually MAKING the neckline trim.
13 October 2005: Ok, well some stuff has happened, but not much. I've made sleeveless base for the gown with a REALLY deep scoopneck to highlight my shoulders, collarbone and bust like Liv's in the picture above. I still haven't had a chance to finish beading both sleeves, and have lot of work to do in general. The gorgeous trim I've found was like, $12 a yard and I bought lik 2.5 yards of it, so it better be used WELL for this darn dress. I'm planning on making a shaped necktrim out of the silver organza and then placing the expensive lacy trim on top of it, along with a lot of supplementary beading. It's gonna be a long haul, but I'm definitely uip for the results. I've decided I want to go with a sort of petal-tube sleeve simply because a full bell sleeve, while more accurate, is a lot to deal with. I'm definitely going to line the organza with itself for two reason: a] I don't have a serger or access to one so I'd have to roll hem a million miles of oragnza by hand, and b] the movie dress's sleeve has a more opaque look to it so I'm gunning for accuracy here. The overdress... well... let's just say I completely mauled my fabric in my impatience. Essentially what I want now is to be able to work with either a rayon or a silk velvet that I will dye myself or have custom dyed. It's a project in itself, but I've had WAY too much trouble with stretch and panne velvet to even want to approach it again. It's funny how one bad encounter can break your spirit. In my heart of hearts I sincerely wish I had worked on this much more than I did these past two years, but I didn't... so I can only hope to work more on it in the coming year in order to be ready for next Halloween. I hope to have pictures of my very slow progress up soon.
