George & Mary met in Norfolk, Virginia. George's father had retired from the U.S. Navy, and

settled the family in Norfolk. Mary's family lived in the Fairmont Park area. According to family

stories, they first met when George was a paperboy. When he would ride past Mary's house,

she would throw rocks to make him look at her. He claims she had great aim, and it was not

long before he noticed not only how well she threw rocks, but how pretty she was too!

George and Mary were married 04 February 1940 in South Mills, N.C.

This picture, taken 04 July 1941, shows Mary happily awaiting the birth of their first child:

During World War II, women played an important role in manufacturing while the men were away fighting the war:

After the war, Bud and Mary both went to work at NASA, at Langley Field, Va.

George worked in the Experimental Machine Shop. The shop built aircraft

models to be tested in wind tunnels at the facility, as well as working with the space program..

Mary worked in personnel with the apprentice training program.

It would be fifteen years later before the family grew again:

My brother Bill drove Mom to the hospital the day I was born. Since he only had his learners permit, he had to wait for other family members to arrive before going home to await the news.

This is Kathleen (ME!) on my Christening Day in September 1956.

The beautiful christening gown I'm wearing was sent to me from Rome, a gift from my Aunt Speedy.

The gown has since become a family heirloom. All together, eight children have been christened wearing this gown.

The second picture shows my Godparents, my brother Bill & cousin Jo Anne. Jo Anne is Speedy's daughter.
