De Gouverneur van de Vrijstaat wordt elke vijf jaar in algemene verkiezingen verkozen. Hij vertegenwoordigt de Vrijstaat naar buiten toe en is hiertoe tevens lid van de Eedgenootschappelijke Raad. De Gouverneur is hoofd van de Regering echter zonder politieke verantwoordelijkheid te dragen en als hoofd van de Strijdkrachten kan hij de Verdedigingsstaat uitroepen. De Gouverneur kan slechts ��nmaal herkozen worden.
The Governor of the Freestate is elected every five years in general elections. He represents the Freestate in external affairs and in affairs concerning the Confederation. For the latter he is a member of the Confederal Council. The Governor is the head of the Government, without bearing any political responsabilities and as the head of the Armed Forces he can declare the State of Self-Defense. The Governor can be re-elected only once.
