37th Station: Fujikawa

History

The Fujikawa is a very interesting spot in a sense that nowaday's local people reproduced the scene of the old day's station, referring to the Hiroshige's picture. Fujikawa used to be famous for its "murasaki mugi" or purple wheat (wheat with purple ears) but it had not been raised for years. People in town knew the name of the plant but never had a chance to see it. The idea the beautiful wheat should be raised once again came up in people's mind, and they started raising the wheat. Nowadays, you can enjoy purple wheat in front of Fujikawa train station. You can learn the history of the Fujikawa station at Fujikawa inn museum which is located at the site of the Fujikawa honjin.
