36th Station: Akasaka

History

Soon after you pass the Goyu district, you will get into the Akasaka district. You might want to stop by "Ohashi-ya", an old inn which was established in the Edo period and still continues to do business. It is said that Ohashi-ya was the model of the inn in the picture. Like Akasaka station and Yoshida, many harlots worked for inns in this districts. Here is one old song "goyu ya akasaka yoshida ga nakuba, nan no yoshimi de edo gayoi" (Who in the word would want to go to Edo unless the Goyu, Akasaka, and Yoshida stations did not exist?)

37th Station: Fujikawa

History

The Fujikawa is a very interesting spot in a sense that nowaday's local people reproduced the scene of the old day's station, referring to the Hiroshige's picture. Fujikawa used to be famous for its "murasaki mugi" or purple wheat (wheat with purple ears) but it had not been raised for years. People in town knew the name of the plant but never had a chance to see it. The idea the beautiful wheat should be raised once again came up in people's mind, and they started raising the wheat. Nowadays, you can enjoy purple wheat in front of Fujikawa train station. You can learn the history of the Fujikawa station at Fujikawa inn museum which is located at the site of the Fujikawa honjin.

35th Station: Goyu

History

When you enter the Goyu district, you will notice that the street still looks as it did in the old days. While working down the natural curvaceous street, you can enjoy seeing old plastered houses with styled lattice windows. It is said that this district was always busy with travelers coming from and going to Edo and that there used to be more than 100 inns in its heydays. Like Yoshida station and Akasaka station , there were many harlots. By the site of honjin, there is a temple called "tohrin-ji" where you can find the tombs for four harlots who commited suiside out of pessimism. It is said that the owner of the inn where these four girls worked felt pity and changed his career.
