13th Station: Hara

History

There has been a huge damp area called Ukishimagahara, and people in Hara had had a hard time planting rice until recently. The sea level has been low and this area drained so badly, so they had to plant rice while soaking up to their chest. What made it worse was that Hara has also been a high tide area, and there were often floods and their rice were damaged frequently.

The current landscape of Hara is just like that of Hiroshige's work. You can enjoy beautiful view of rice fields with the background of Mt. Fuji on the Tokaido highway.
