12th Station: Numazu |
History |
Numazu used to be a castle town in old days, starting from sengoku-jidai or civil war in the 16th century period by Takeda Katsuyori, a son of Takeda Shingen, a famous warrior during this period. Although Numazu shuku (inn district) was very busy, there are not many signs for shuku (inn)-related sites.
Numazu has been famous for its beautiful pine trees, senbon matsubara on the beach. Sen means thousand and bon is a counter for long, thin objects. Matsu is pines and bara (hara) is fields, so Senbon matsubara literally means "field of thousands of pine trees.
