15th Station: Kanbara

History

It is said that the above quite well known picture is a masterpiece among Hiroshige's 53 tsugi. Kanbara is warm throughout the year and it is unknown why Hiroshige drew the snow scene of Kanbara (Besides, he did not travel in the winter).

People in Kanbara had a difficult time with serious floods of Fuji river. However, the river was also an important route to deliver things, like salt and rice during the Edo period, and this district was very busy.

Old buildings and houses relatively well remain in Kanbara, and you can walk through such houses.
