16th Station: Yui

History

You can enjoy the landscape just like that of Hiroshige's Yui.

Yui was one of the three smallest inns districts among Tokaido's 53 stations. There were three routes during the Satsuta pass in Yui: the lower route, middle route, and upper route. The lower route was the hardest to pass through, and the other two routes were made later.

As you can guess from the name, it is said that Yui Shosetsu was originally from Yui. During the early Edo period, a huge number of samurai lost their jobs and spent miserable lives. Shosetsu tried to rebel with such samurai against the Tokugawa government. However, the government found their conspiracy in advance, and their plan did not work out.
