48th Station: Sakanoshita |
History |
Sakanoshita was one of the most dangerous parts of the Tokaido in the Edo period. Besides its steep montain path, sanzoku, or highwayman appeared, and people were in fear of passing the path in the old days. There were many inns in Sakanoshita stations, and this district was crowded. However, after railroad service started in the Meiji era and highways were opened, this district declined in prosperity.
