47th Station: Seki

History

This is the only district among the 53 stations of Tokaido which was selected as the district where traditional bildings are well preserved. In fact, you might feel that this district itself is a huge museum. You can enjoy walking down the old day's street while learning about the history of the station.

The station's name, seki probably comes from Suzuka (name of this area) no seki (barrier), one of the three big barriers (fuwa, arachi, and suzuka) in ancient Japanese. The three barriers were closed when something happened to Yamato, the center of the ancient Japan. In the medieval period, this district was developed to a monzen machi, a town built around a temple, under the Seki family. In the Edo period, many daimyo processions stayed in this district on the way to Edo, and Seki was a very busy district.
