Archibald was the son of Allan McCoan and Catherine McCorquodale. He was my great great great great grandfather. He was born in Argyl Scotland in between 1787 - 1789. The McCowans of this county were part of Clan MacDougall. No records have been found of his birth or of his marriage to Margaret (Peggy) McDougall. It is believed that he was born near Oban, and moved to Appin.
He was baptised at Kilninver Church in Argyll on the 19 of January 1989.
Archibald and Margaret had ten children, and even thier records are hard to find. The earliest record found is the record of their son Alexander's baptism, which has them living at Blarmachfouldach, just south of Fort William in Kilmallie parish, which was then part of the Commissariot of Argyll.
Archibald then moved his family to North Ballachulish when he found work at the quarry. This is in Inverness county. In the 1841 Census, Archibald, Margaret, and six of thier children were still living in North Ballachulish.
Archibald and Margaret moved to Canada with some of thier family in the summer or autumn of 1843. They moved to the Huron district on the eastern shores of Lake Huron. The Ontario Archives Land Records Index shows that in October 1843, Archibald leased from the Canada Company, Lots 18 and 19 on Concession 2, in Stanley Township, Huron County, Ontario.
Archibald remained here untill his death, which was between 1861 and 1871.
Margaret died in Tuckersmith, in Huron County, on 27 July, 1873.
