Elizabeth McDonald


(1823? - 1906)

Elizabeth was the daughter of Duncan and Mary McDonald and is my great great great grandmother. She was born near Oban, Argyll, Scotland around 1823/24.

On 1 January 1852, Elizabeth married Alexander McCowan in Goderich, Huron County, Canada.

Their first child, Duncan, was born on 8 December 1852 in London, Ontario, Canada.

In 1853, Elizabeth and Alexander moved with Duncan to Australia, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on 23 October 1853. They lived on the gold fields in Victoria, then moved to the Hunter River, in New South Wales. This is were thier second child, Archibald was born on 15 April 1856.

In 1857, the family moved to Clarence River, near Grafton. Thier children Alexander, and Margaret were born in Grafton on 18 November 1858 and 11 December 1860 respectively.

The family then moved to Ulmarra. Mary was born at Ulmarra on 21 July 1862.

The family moved to Palmers Channel, and this is where Ann was born on 7 March 1864, and died the same year. Elizabeth gave birth to twins, Ann and James, on 9 April 1866, and Ann died in June that year.

In 1897/98 Elizabeth and Alexander moved to their daughter Margaret's property "Inverary" in Mullumbimby, New South Wales. Alexander died on 16 May 1905 and Elizabeth died on 19 June 1906, They were both buried on Inverary.

Elizabeth had eight children with Alexander;
