THE HYMNS OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER
Martin Luther (1483-1546) spoke highly of music in the church. Because of his understanding of the priesthood of all believers,  Luther encouraged the participation of the congregation in worship.  One major way the congregation could participate in the Mass (the chief Sunday service) was through the singing of the liturgy and hymns.  Luther wrote or translated at least thirty-nine hymns, most of them in 1523-1524.
