ABCs of Kindergarten, cont.
Folders Your child will bring a daily folder with their behavior and any notes for the day. Please sign and return each day. On Fridays, they will bring home a different folder that will include the childs work for the week and a newsletter. Please return the folder on Monday and include any special notes and monies in it. This is our way of making sure you receive all the important information from South School.

Footwear -
Please have your child wear tennis shoes that are appropriate for running and active movement. Cowboy boots, flip flops, slides and dress shoes, for example, are not good for school activities because they are slippery and inappropriate for the gym and the playground.

Goodies - We always appreciate donations for the class (candy, stickers, pencils, markers, treasure box prizes, etc.).  If sending candy, please do not send hard candy, as this could be a possible choking hazard.

Homework - In a few weeks, your child will be bringing home a take-home reader to share with you. The book should be read with an adult, the reading log signed and both pieces returned in the reading folder. These take home books promote home involvement and allow for reinforcement of book concepts, reading strategies and beginning comprehension skills. Please take the time to enjoy this special reading with your child.

Illness - The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the morning. It is important, however, to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents others from becoming ill. Children function more effectively in the classroom when they are healthy.

Important
- Please place all moneys in the baggie provided. Be sure to include a note stating the purpose for the money and send all monies on Mondays if possible!

Journals- One strategy that will be used to help convey the vital concept that print conveys meaning is the frequent use of journal writing. In these journals the kindergartners combine their emerging writing skills with their drawing skills. As the children are exposed to a variety of phonics and reading experiences, journal entries will move from drawing and inventive spellings towards more conventional writing.

Kindness- Students in our classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members of our class as well as others with kindness and respect. Hitting, fighting, name-calling, and making fun of others will not be permitted.
