25 March 2003 - Julia was spot on with her pick for Best Documentary Oscar (see news item 5 Feb) - the Oscar going to the controversial Michael Moore for Bowling For Columbine. Whilst Meryl Streep didn't land a nomination for Adaptation, it was a shame she didn't get the nod for her outstanding performance in The Hours. Big congrats of course to our own Nicole Kidman. Host Steve Martin's best gag of the night was definitely "Nicole wore a fake nose in every film - except The Hours!"

21 March 2003 - The US release date for Mona Lisa Smile has been pushed back to 19th December 2003 - the release was previously set down for 21st November which is Thanksgiving in the States. The main reason appears to be a focus by Sony on pushing this film for the Oscars. The Christmas period is a huge time for major new releases, where in the US the final instalment of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy is to be released on 17th December. The other film set down against Mona Lisa Smile for 19th December is Garfield (yes, the cat!) yahoo.com

15 March 2003 - Latest word on The Prince And The Freshman is that Prague, in the Czech Republic, is a likely location for the European scenes. yahoo.com

Julia was in Prague in 2001 filming The Bourne Identity.

15 March 2003 - More on The Bourne Identity sequel - The Bourne Identity is the first in a series of three books and, while director Doug Liman has signed on for two sequels, the film's star, Matt Damon, has no such obligations. Talking to Empire Online in 2001, Damon explained his reasons for keeping his options open and whether he will indeed return to tote his guns once again.

"I didn't sign up for another one, partly because I didn't know how I would enjoy this one. Having said that, I did have a good time doing it and I would do another one, but it would have to be based on the script. I don't want to milk the cash cow, audiences don't appreciate that - I always used to hate that, when I'd see a sequel and it sucked, so I think the goal for the sequel will be to do it if we think we can make it better than the first one. Then that'll be something we're all really excited about."

The Bourne Identity took quite a departure from Ludlum's book - the film dropped many of the book's key characters and the storyline was altered to accommodate Damon's more youthful hero. How this will affect the plot of subsequent films is a dilemma for screenwriter Tony Gilroy.

Damon said "Because he (Gilroy) went so far afield with the first novel there's really not much he can retain from the second one, so you're keeping the name but then making up a whole other story."

Hopefully Julia's character Nicky will be reprised.

14 March 2003 - Sequel to The Bourne Identity to be written! Variety reports that Universal Pictures has rehired The Bourne Identity scribe Tony Gilroy to adapt Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Supremecy.

In Supremecy, a Chinese vice-premier has been slain by the legendary assassin Jason Bourne. Of course, there is no Jason Bourne. The identity is simply a cover for the CIA's David Webb. But with someone else assuming the Bourne identity, the U.S. must find a way to avert a international diplomatic scandal that imperils Sino-American peace.

The sequel is being produced by Frank Marshall, and is being overseen by production executive Ali Brecker. (19 Mar 03 - correction published by variety - Paul L. Sandberg and Patrick Crowley are producing "The Bourne Supremacy.")

Gilroy's recent credits include Armageddon, Bait and Proof of Life.

There is no word at this stage on casting for the film.

13 March 2003 - the Australian cinema release of A Guy Thing is now 'undated' according to the film's local distributors, 20th Century Fox. This in effect means that at present no release date has been scheduled for the film by the Australian subsidiary of Fox, who receive their directives from Fox's head office in the States. JS-AU has been assured that the film will be released here, at an as yet unknown date.

The cinemas themselves have no control over the release date which is entirely at the whim of the distributing company. Today, Village have confirmed the undated status of A Guy Thing; Reading believe we can expect the release sometime in July; whilst Greater Union has an expected date of 24th July.

12 March 2003 - the Australian cinema release of A Guy Thing, originally scheduled for March 13, now appears to have been delayed until July 24. Despite this, both Village and Reading cinemas websites still state the release date is March 13 - but with ZERO publicity, no ads, no ability to book tickets online, no mention on tonight's SBS Movie Show, the alarm bells were well and truly ringing....confirmation will be sought and posted shortly - watch this space.

11 March 2003 - Julia has been immortalised in a new rap song! One of Eminem's former 'Tha Outsidaz' group mates who goes by the name 'Pacewon' had this to say (which apparently disses Eminem) in a verse over Mobb Deeps Right Back At You:

Is it your heart, or is it the lies/you lack courage like the lion in the Wizard of Oz, you went from brunette to blond just to better your cause/but your hypeman album sound better than yours/bunny rabbit got a funny habit/we say/he let a honey and a homey have it, cause he gay/well Im hard to the core like Brun in Krush Groove, you a little bitch that ate too many mushrooms/got your voice on the track of your choice, you made noise, but then turned you back on your boys/even did it to Royce, wheres Head? Wheres Buzz?/Im sick of your songs, I need lead ear plugs/the same thing you tried to do with the Outs, is the very same reason that they booing you now/like the DA in court Im pulling two of your files, better save that last dance for Julia Stiles.

But the project won't reach the finish line before Ted and Sylvia, Focus Features' Plath biopic starring Gwyneth Paltrow, which opens in the US in October. Unlike the morose Bell Jar, assures a Focus Spokesman, "our film is romance, romance, romance." Hey, does Christine Peters know about this? Who Weekly
