![]() The Prince And The FreshmanLast Report: 1 May 2003 More on Prague from Variety: Prague-based production service company Stillking has landed its third feature this year, Paramount romantic comedy "The Prince and the Freshman." Shooting in castles around the Czech Republic begins in mid July for five weeks, after winding up its Toronto leg. Martha Coollidge helms and Julia Stiles stars as the American coed who falls for the prince of Denmark. This is the first word that Toronto is also a location, and the prince is once again Danish! 30 April 2003 - Paramount is joining the Prague production influx with romantic comedy The Prince and the Freshman starring Julia Stiles and directed by Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl, Rambling Rose). The film has received the green light and will begin production in the Czech capital in June, Prague sources told Screendaily. Paramount joins a slate of other firms shooting in the Czech capital in what may prove to the Prague film scene�s busiest year ever. The second unit of Universal�s Van Helsing wrapped last week, while earlier this month, MGM and Dimension Films green-lit Terry Gilliam�s $75 million Brothers Grimm (with two of Julia's previous co-stars Heath Ledger and Matt Damon) and Akron Entertainment gave the nod to an untitled First Daughter project starring Mandy Moore. These shoots join Guillermo Del Toro�s Hellboy (Sony), the untitled Ugly Americans project (DreamWorks), and the BBC�s Charles II. Lions Gate Films and Sobini Films, the production outfit headed by Tristar Pictures founder and ex-chief executive Mark Amin, share co-production credits on the film in which Stiles plays an American college student who unknowingly falls in love with a British prince played by British TV actor Luke Mably. Screen Daily Hey, is this prince British or Danish or what?! 20 April 2003 - Variety reports that British actor Luke Mably has landed the starring role opposite Julia Stiles in The Prince and the Freshman. Mably will play the prince of the title in Katherine Fugate's script. Pic is the story of a female student at a Midwestern university who has the dubious fortune to fall in love with a European prince spending the semester there incognito. Mably just appeared in Danny Boyle's medical epidemic thriller "28 Days Later," due out this spring Stateside from Fox Searchlight. Martha Coolidge ("Out To Sea") will direct the romantic comedy, which is also the first pic from Sobini Films, the production company founded by former Trimark owner Mark Amin with Robin Schorr shortly after Amin sold Trimark to Lions Gate in October 2000. Paramount will release the film in North America, with Lions Gate Intl. handling foreign distribution. 15 Mar 2003 - Filming is scheduled to begin in Prague, the Czech Republic, according to Greg's Previews 7 Mar 2003 - Julia's Official Site reports Julia will next star as an American medical student who hooks up with the Prince of Denmark. A Paramount/Lions Gate movie, filming is to start in May. This is of course The Prince And The Freshman, which has been undergoing a re-write for the past few months. Jack Amiel and Michael Beglar, who have worked on the TV series Malcolm In The Middle as well as co-writing the upcoming Kate Hudson film Raising Helen, have rewritten the original script penned by Katherine Fugate, changing the nationality of the Prince from England to Denmark. It also appears Susan Sarandon has now signed on. Wonder whether as a med student Julia's character will still be tough-talkin' and motorcycle-ridin'?! Coolidge has been scouting locations in recent weeks despite suffering a broken toe. Julia is reportedly in talks to play the starring role. The story has been penned by Katherine Fugate, who also wrote Carolina. Story: A British prince comes to America, longing to spend a year as a regular college student. He attends a mid-Western university where he meets a tough talking, motorcycle riding freshman (Julia) who wins his heart. But when the Queen of England discovers the unlikely romance, she takes steps to end it. Susan Sarandon is in talks to play the Queen.

But the project won't reach the finish line before Ted and Sylvia, Focus Features' Plath biopic starring Gwyneth Paltrow, which opens in the US in October.
