The films mentioned here are those that it has been reported Julia may star in, is in talks to star in, has been linked to, or is rumoured to be involved in. The Prince And The Freshman

Last Report: 1 May 2003

More on Prague from Variety:

Prague-based production service company Stillking has landed its third feature this year, Paramount romantic comedy "The Prince and the Freshman."

Shooting in castles around the Czech Republic begins in mid July for five weeks, after winding up its Toronto leg. Martha Coollidge helms and Julia Stiles stars as the American coed who falls for the prince of Denmark.

This is the first word that Toronto is also a location, and the prince is once again Danish!

30 April 2003 - Paramount is joining the Prague production influx with romantic comedy The Prince and the Freshman starring Julia Stiles and directed by Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl, Rambling Rose).

The film has received the green light and will begin production in the Czech capital in June, Prague sources told Screendaily.

Paramount joins a slate of other firms shooting in the Czech capital in what may prove to the Prague film scenes busiest year ever.

The second unit of Universals Van Helsing wrapped last week, while earlier this month, MGM and Dimension Films green-lit Terry Gilliams $75 million Brothers Grimm (with two of Julia's previous co-stars Heath Ledger and Matt Damon) and Akron Entertainment gave the nod to an untitled First Daughter project starring Mandy Moore. These shoots join Guillermo Del Toros Hellboy (Sony), the untitled Ugly Americans project (DreamWorks), and the BBCs Charles II.

Lions Gate Films and Sobini Films, the production outfit headed by Tristar Pictures founder and ex-chief executive Mark Amin, share co-production credits on the film in which Stiles plays an American college student who unknowingly falls in love with a British prince played by British TV actor Luke Mably.

Screen Daily

Hey, is this prince British or Danish or what?!

20 April 2003 - Variety reports that British actor Luke Mably has landed the starring role opposite Julia Stiles in The Prince and the Freshman.

Mably will play the prince of the title in Katherine Fugate's script. Pic is the story of a female student at a Midwestern university who has the dubious fortune to fall in love with a European prince spending the semester there incognito.

Mably just appeared in Danny Boyle's medical epidemic thriller "28 Days Later," due out this spring Stateside from Fox Searchlight.

Martha Coolidge ("Out To Sea") will direct the romantic comedy, which is also the first pic from Sobini Films, the production company founded by former Trimark owner Mark Amin with Robin Schorr shortly after Amin sold Trimark to Lions Gate in October 2000.

Paramount will release the film in North America, with Lions Gate Intl. handling foreign distribution.

15 Mar 2003 - Filming is scheduled to begin in Prague, the Czech Republic, according to Greg's Previews

7 Mar 2003 - Julia's Official Site reports Julia will next star as an American medical student who hooks up with the Prince of Denmark. A Paramount/Lions Gate movie, filming is to start in May.

This is of course The Prince And The Freshman, which has been undergoing a re-write for the past few months. Jack Amiel and Michael Beglar, who have worked on the TV series Malcolm In The Middle as well as co-writing the upcoming Kate Hudson film Raising Helen, have rewritten the original script penned by Katherine Fugate, changing the nationality of the Prince from England to Denmark. It also appears Susan Sarandon has now signed on.

Wonder whether as a med student Julia's character will still be tough-talkin' and motorcycle-ridin'?! By the way, Hamlet was also the 'Prince of Denmark'.

28 Feb 2003 - From a variety.com article on director Martha Coolidge: Coolidge....is in pre-production on the Paramount/ Lions Gate co-production "The Prince and the Freshman," a romantic comedy starring Julia Stiles. Coolidge has been scouting locations in recent weeks despite suffering a broken toe. Does this mean Julia has signed up.....?

9 Dec 2002 - The Prince And The Freshman is to be produced by Lions Gate (producers of O) and Paramount. Julia is reportedly in talks to play the starring role. The story has been penned by Katherine Fugate, who also wrote Carolina.

Story: A British prince comes to America, longing to spend a year as a regular college student. He attends a mid-Western university where he meets a tough talking, motorcycle riding freshman (Julia) who wins his heart. But when the Queen of England discovers the unlikely romance, she takes steps to end it.

Susan Sarandon is in talks to play the Queen.

The Bell Jar

Last Report: 28 Feb 2003

Tim Blake Nelson is mulling over an offer to direct a film adaptation of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, and considering Julia Stiles (who he directed in 2001's O) to portray the suicidal poet. But the project won't reach the finish line before Ted and Sylvia, Focus Features' Plath biopic starring Gwyneth Paltrow, which opens in the US in October.

What's the book about? The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under - maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

The Bell Jar is read by Kat (Julia) in 10 Things I Hate About You, and is also featured on the bookshelf in Julia's apartment on her Official Web Site.

As far back as April 2000 in a TV Guide Online Chat, Julia mentioned "People have suggested I play Sylvia Plath in The Bell Jar".

Romance And Cigarettes

Last Report: 23 July 2002

Following the success of their musical O Brother, Where Art Thou?, brothers Joel and Ethan Coen are headed back to the genre with Romance and Cigarettes.

Written by John Turturro, who has appeared in four Coen brothers films to date, Romance and Cigarettes has all of its leads dancing and singing. The Coen brothers are currently casting the film, and Julia is being courted for a role, along with James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken and Steve Buscemi. Adam Sandler may also be making a cameo in the film.

Interestingly, Julia has mentioned before that she can't sing...maybe she's just being modest.

Your Life Is Now

Julia is developing Your Life is Now for MTV Films and Marc Platt Productions, planning to star in and produce the film, according to MGM's press kit for A Guy Thing (2002).

Through an open-ended development and production deal with Paramount Pictures and MTV Films, she will develop starring vehicles and receive producing credit on projects she brings to the table.

"She's a great young actress who is very intelligent, has a good development sense and who wants some control over the pictures she stars in," David Gale, head of MTV Films told Daily Variety in 2001. And with the success of Save The Last Dance, an MTV/Paramount co-production, the studio is anxious to work with Julia again.

30 May 2000 - variety.com: In a deal worth mid-against high-six figures, Universal has made a pre-emptive purchase of Your Life Is Now, a romantic comedy spec script by Elisa Bell. Marc Platt will produce.

While Bell recently did a rewrite on Once More With Feeling at Fox, she is best known for penning Thirty Wishes, a spec script that became a hot auction property several years ago and landed at Universal with Michael J. Fox aboard to star and direct. That plan didnt pan out, but Universal didnt wait for competition to amass for Your Life. Led by Marc Platt Prods. prexy Abby Wolf and U exec veep Allison Brecker, the studio bought it before other bids mobilized.

The project is described as something of a cross between Working Girl and The Graduate, with a young female protagonist taking on the world after completing school.

Mrs Windemare's Fan

Julia has optioned Mrs. Windemares Fan, based on the similarly titled Oscar Wilde play. Julia told Premiere magazine in 2002 "...it'll be a long time coming."

Lady Windemere's Fan - A play by Oscar Wilde

Clever dialogue, fast paced repartee, and pithy epigrams abound in this sparkling Victorian comedy of manners. The first of Oscar Wilde's dramas, the 1892 play attests to the authors legendary reputation as a wit and a keen observer of ironic situations. In Lady Windemere's Fan, Wilde offers a splendidly satirical view of society's obsessive regard for appearances rather than reality.

A paragon of morality, Lady Windemere firmly rejects the company of anyone exhibiting even the slightest deviation from the social code. Suspecting her husband of a dalliance with Mrs Erlynne, a woman of dubious reputation, Lady Windemere rashly decides to abandon her secure position for the seductive charms of Lord Darlington. The voice of caution arises from an unexpected source when the mysterious Mrs Erlynne reveals the calamitous effects of her own disregard for duty and virtue, and she augments her advice with an act of self sacrifice. By laying claim to Lady Windemere's telltale fan, the woman from outside society shows the model of social propriety the difference between true morality and its semblance.
